Bear mace is almost always better. If you stumble upon a thousand pound animal, that charges you at 35mph, good luck hitting it, let alone killing it. Bring a pistol or shot gun, if your hunting or backpacking for an extended time, but still bear mace is still your best fast response defense.

Bear mace is an all or nothing weapon and only has a 12' range. Fuck that shit. The sound of a large bore gun will often times scare off a bear.

This forum loves to obsess over predators but for every bear that kills a person we kill them a hundred fold easily. I don't feel bad at all when people get killes by them and I wish we didn't kill the bear dor doing so. Humanity is the real monster

Had a bear come awfully close last year after taking down a black tail. Luckily heard him rushing through the brush, and he stopped before trying to steal the kill. Gun shot was like a dinner bell to that big black bear. Lucky it wasn't a Brown Bear.

I do know having a gun makes you feel more powerful, and I'd rather have one than not, but for most people bear spray will be much more reliable.
