Bad bear year in Alaska

Theres alot a guy can learn from that video.
For one thing he rushes up there not expecting it to charge and then starts by back peddling down hill never regaininag good footing, which is critical for a decent shot, the rest of the encounter. It appears he has to use his arms as a counter balance to keep from falling backwards rather than operating the shotgun and looses a shoe in the process. Not sure if he is trying to make a kill shot or purposely shooting low to scare it but the video is at 13 seconds when the charge starts and 16 when he fires. Alot can happen in three seconds. At 19 seconds his back is to the bear as he is disappearing from the camera. It all happened in six seconds and he was already focused on the bear with the weapon in hand as she charged.

This video shows a trained professional falling backwards in a mall with no obstructions to trip on while being attacked with a knife. (He shot the guy six times before he finally bled out.)

This dude specifically trains people to always step forward if you have to move while firing to keep from tripping backwards.
I started paying close attention to this after what happened because i had no idea i was backing up but only focusing on the sights.

I like how he says he aimed at “her side as to not kill her.” Bullshit motherfucker, you weren’t thinking anything beyond lizard brain instincts.

bears scare the hell out of me.

i dont know why you guys make such a big deal about snakes and spiders. i'll take snakes over bears anyday of the week. you shoot a snake with a shotgun and its fucking dead.

How ridiculously inept humans are at defending themselves even against animals half their size always makes me think that watching MMA is sort of like like watching a turtle race. It's only interesting because they're both turtles.

Lol yup. Even a man like Mike Tyson, considered the baddest man on the planet was cognizant enough to comprehend the sheer strength of wild animals. He says about wrestling with his adolescent pet tiger.."It's gotta be a mind game because physically I don't stand a chance. And she's just a baby, she's 220 pounds."

If there'd be any human physical specimen that'd I'd consider a beast in the literal sense of the word it'd be Mike Tyson, and to see how quick he is to concede his physical inferiority to his pet tiger is humbling.

Getting that time of year, spring bears running around coming out of hibernation.
Dialing in and working on how many shots a second with slugs on target one can get. Might runs into a 35mph 1,000lb cheese grader coming straight at you with only two seconds to react.

.357 is minimal, people have gotten lucky with 9mm because the bear turned even though it wasn't a fatal hit, but why be on the lower end of the spectrum?
I know a old timer guide that recently went up in caliber because of a crazy charge they almost didn't survive even though he had a slug gun and his assistant guide a 375 while guiding a bow hunter. He sufferd ptsd for awhile. He was man enough to admit it after a lifetime hunting and guiding in alaska.
I lost a middle toe two years ago when charged by a sow with cubs, last shot I was on my back with my foot between me and her. Fortunately one brained her or she would have ripped my face off before dying from the first shot to the chest. Was a 10mm but a 454 may have stopped her the first shot. That's what I pack now, it's the same weight with more than twice the punch.
holy shit

its like Nick Nolte appeared on sherdog.

Humans used to have to fend off Cave Bears in Europe. Imagine trying to fight something off like that with a pointed stick.

Two paths to victory for any sherdog poster who has trained.

Looking at picture on the right, clearly does not do leg day leaving it susceptible to a double leg and leg based top control for an easy bloody GnP win.

<{JustBleed}>

Also clearly does not understand 'protecting that glass thin jaw' by tucking chin or head movement.

Touch it with teh jab a few times and you would see it quickly back away.

Dont get too caught in that @unimackpass guys injuried while fighting off a bear.

I too once lost a toe ...nail when i tripped over a laying Shih Tzu i did not see and was lucky i survived. Do you know how many people each year die due to tripping accidents?

I keep bear mace in my house mounted next to my nightstands in my bedroom in case of intruders. My wife doesn't shoot, and doesn't want a gun innthe house when im not home.

I agree, anything I can kill with a shovel doesnt scare me

Mistake noted.

A true sherdoggers uses SherFoo and not just bjj. Bjj is not well rounded enough to take out a bear. But an average Sherdogger trained in the art of SherFoo which is a multi-discipline of bjj, boxing, wrestling and most importantly brutal shit talking is unbeatable via single combat versus any man or beast.

All you need to prevent being mauled to death by a bear is a .22
When you see the bear charging at you, turn the gun to yourself. It will be better that way.

Kidding aside (kind of), bears generally don't attack humans nor eat humans, they're pretty docile but very territorial, especially when they have cubs around. But a good rule of thumb is that they won't fuck with you if you don't fuck with them. Of course, there are always exceptions, but generally, bears won't mind your presence unless they feel you are a threat to them, their cubs or their food.

Sharing a photo I recently took of a beautiful black bear in Wyoming. This guy was close but you could tell he was pretty comfortable. He saw me and kind of just acknowledged me, hung out for a bit and went on his way not giving a fuck. The whole thing was about 5 minutes, so I had a good chance of snapping a couple of pics and just contemplating the bear. It was a great moment.

This other time I did spot a bear with her cubs up on a tree, and it's just common sense to not get closer and go a different direction. I didn't have any problems either.

This kind of shit is why we need assault weapons

Assault Weapon is a misnomer made up by gungrabbers.

If you mean an actual "Assault Rifle", no one is carrying a select fire M4/M16 variant out in bear country nor is anyone carrying the semi auto version AR15 variant out in bear country. Carrying a rifle chambered in an intermediate cartridge like the 5.56 (or even 300 BO supersonics) out in bear would be nonsensical.

Maybe something like a 308 FAL Para SBR would make a bit more sense but you're getting into Battle Rifle territory there.

I have spent a ton of time working with and around wild grizzly's and have never had a problem, but then I read about some person that has probably never even seen a wild bear getting mauled by one. People just keeping their heads up in bear country will solve most of the problems you could run into.

I'm really stoked that the 10mm is getting so much love these days.

Why is 10mm so much better than 9mm btw? I mean obviously it's a larger bullet/ballistic but does it have that much more powder/velocity behind it? I hear a 9mm is pretty weak even on some humans. 10 isn't THAT much bigger bore.
