How much has this changed in recent years? Seems like only ten years ago 4 wins would get you to a title shot in any division . Now that number can vary greatly ,but its usually around 8 wins.

Fans need more exposure to get excited about a title fight. Do you think that’s a good or bad thing?

Thoughts?

Its not a matter of needing to build fan excitement. Divisions are deeper and Champions are picky about who and how often they fight.

If you’re Brock you don’t need any
Or 1...
You could have used an example of fighters that got title shots with no wins (McGregor)or coming off of a loss (Holm) or just handed a title without even fighting for it at all (Rousey)

Champs are less active.

Compared to the old days, sure, when there were less than ten events a year. Now? Well, you can do the math (how many divisions, if there's an interim champ, etc etc etc), I'm tired.

2018 so far - 11 events, 6 title fights
2017 - 39 events, 20 title fights
2016 - 41 events, 22 title fights
2015 - 41 events, 20 title fights
2014 - 46 events, 16 title fights
2013 - 33 events, 19 title fights
2012 - 31 events, 13 title fights
2011 - 27 events, 12 title fights
2010 - 24 events, 8 title fights
2009 - 20 events, 7 title fights
2008 - 20 events, 11 title fights

Volkan = 3 (3 wins and then the championship loss)

I think it's more about who your wins are against but that system is too subjective in a way. Then there's the guys like James Vick he can't get a top 10 win because a top 10 fighter won't take the fight they have too much to lose if they lose to the lower ranked fighter that's on a nice win streak.

It's simple

Back then there were no official UFC rankings to climb before you got your shot and now there are

100 twitter followers = No title fight
1,000 twitter followers = 10 wins until a title fight
10,000 twitter followers = 5 wins until a title fight.
100,000 twitter followers = 3 fights until a title fight.
1,000,000 twitter followers = 1 win until a title fight.
10,000,000 twitter followers = Sign a contact and get a title fight.

It all seems to be how hard they want to push certain fighters now. Like you know that if till beats Thompson he's getting a title shot, even though he's had two ranked fights in his life. Meanwhile you have guys like maia who had to go on a crazy 7 fight win streak against top guys in order to get a shot. A lot of the newer generation is getting to cut the line. Ngannou you argue is another one, Cody cut the line too

It's all about that variation. Some fighters need 8 wins because other fighters need, I don't know... something close to zero.

The more excitement you generate, the fewer fights you need. Is normal.

Depends on division. HW / FLW / WBW are all so shallow that a win or two gets you a shot. FW LW/WW are so stacked that a 10- fight streak doesn’t guarantee a shot.
