8.5/10 from the DL sounds good to me.

Watched it around 12 hours ago- First IMAX showing in Thailand. Skipped half a day of work to get to the 9am show.

Movie starts with a serious bang, with Hulk and Thanos duking it out right away. The movie wastes no time in establishing that Thanos is a bad ass motherfucker. He beats Thor and Hulk and Loki with little effort. By the start of the movie he already had the power stone.

Heimdall uses the last of his power (dark energy) to teleport a defeated Hulk back to Earth. Thanos makes him pay for this with his life.

Loki again pledges allegiance to him, Loki-style, but has a dagger in hand and goes for the strike, but at this point Thanos who the space gem, uses it to stop Loki's blow, then crushes his neck in front of Thor and mentions that there will be no resurrections this time.

Thanos then uses the power stone to blow up the spaceship.

Thanos truly enters with a bang. Wishing the first 15 minutes 2 major characters were already dead, with Thor's fate unknown (unless you watched the trailers, which everybody did)

Hulk crash lands into the sanctum and turns back into Banner, and says that Thanos is coming.

Dr Strange approaches Tony Stark, who is taking a romantic walk with Pepper, and she makes it a point to say that he needs regular shirts in the closet, not a shirt with nano-tech which Tony was wearing. Tony insists that it is just a precaution, to keep them safe in case anything happens. Tony was right, Dr Strange opens a portal and shows up with Banner, to get Tony's help. They return to the sanctum and Tony breaks it to Banner that the Avengers have broken up, and that he and Captain America have issues, and its not simply that easy to call him.

Banner insists that the world could be coming to an end, so Tony needs to make that call. And BAM right when he brings out the phone... the donut spaceship from the trailers appear... and 2 of the children of thanos are coming right for the Time Stone.

But with Captain America, Dr Strange, AND The Hulk... should be enough to face Ebony Maw and Black Dwarf... but there is an issue, Banner can simply not Hulk out even when he is danger. He cannot transform. Has Thanos beaten fear into Hulk?

The battle begins.

.... (will update this when I have more time)...

Dragonlord’s Review of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR
(No Spoilers)

Bottom Line: An epic crossover event that starts off on shaky ground with an uneven pacing and an intrusive bland score but redeems itself when the focus shifts to Thanos midway and finishes strong with a spectacular multi-battle sequences at the end.

[Note: For this non-spoiler Infinity War review, I will be as vague as possible with the details to make it as safe for everyone to read.]

If you’re a comic book fan, there was something special when you read a crossover event for the first time. Whether it was Secret Wars or Crisis on Infinite Earths or Infinity Gauntlet, it felt like a momentous occasion seeing the various iconic characters and teams gather together in one comic book series. That is how it must feel like for the Marvel Cinematic Universe fans watching Avengers: Infinity War.

Clearly meant for those that have faithfully followed the MCU, Infinity War does away with introductions or plot explanations on previous movies and dives straight after the events of Thor: Ragnarok. The first thing that stood out to me was Alan Silvestri’s bland, phoned-in orchestral score. The music didn’t fit, it felt intrusive and cheesy which diminished the gravitas of the scene a bit. Just to be clear, the scene is fine but the right score (or no score at all) would have made it better.

From there, the story shifts to Earth where the film bombards you with action scene after action scene. The problem lies that there’s no proper build-up and greater tension for Thanos and the Black Order’s arrival. The fight scenes are superbly done but sometimes it’s too rapid and hard to follow, especially the night scenes.

One of the enjoyable aspects of the film is seeing the different MCU characters meet for the first time, which they milk for maximum humor effect. The banter does get a bit tiresome though when some of the more egotistical characters squabble amongst themselves to see who has the bigger dick. Though lot of the jokes are funny, the comedy goes a bit overboard for my taste and should have been reeled in.

The first act had an uneven pacing where scene-to-scene transition didn't flow naturally. The turning point when the film starts to find its right footing is when Captain America shows up. It’s no coincidence that the film starts heading in the right direction as Cap is one of the MCU’s major leader characters that doesn’t rely on quips and one-liners compared to some of his peers.

Another inflection point for the better is when the perspective shifts to Thanos and his pursuit for the Infinity Stones at the film’s midpoint. Slightly reminiscent of Jim Starlin’s The Thanos Quest, not only does the audience get to know the Mad Titan better and his motivations, they’ll even be inexplicably compelled to root for him to get the Stones. Aside from Thanos being magnificently rendered on the screen, Josh Brolin gives a wonderful nuanced performance that shines through all the fantastic CGI effects. Thanos joins the ranks of Gollum and Caesar as one of filmdom’s most memorable talking CGI characters ever.

Skillfully balancing the different Marvel characters and giving every one of their portrayals justice, directors Anthony and Joe Russo and screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have done an exemplary job creating an extraordinary crossover event that is massive in scope and have crafted, not one, but two monumentally epic climactic battles. This is the MCU’s Empire Strikes Back.

Rating: 8.5/10

Kinda felt bad for the Asgardians. Half of their race was probably killed by Hela in Thor: Ragnarok. The refugees escaped Asgard’s destruction but only to die by the hands of Thanos and the Black Order.

With Heimdall killed by Thanos at the beginning, there goes one of the popular theories out of the window that Heimdall has the Soul Stone.

As expected, Loki died. At least he went out with honor trying to kill Thanos. Also debunked is the theory that Loki was the one who summoned Thanos at the end of Thor: Ragnarok.

Sif not part of Thor: Ragnarok turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to her. She would have been killed by Hela alongside the Warriors Three in Thor: Ragnarok. If by some chance she survived, she would have met her demise alongside the Asgardians by the hands of Thanos.

They didn’t show Valkyrie, Korg and Meek among the casualties. Hopefully they survived somehow.

Hulk versus Thanos was good but it wasn’t the epic brawl I was expecting. The actual fight was limited to a confined space and was all too brief. These two MCU behemoths deserved to duke it out in an open field where they can cut loose and all kinds of cool destructive moves take place.

Why didn’t Heimdall send Thor to Earth instead of the Hulk?

Hulk/Banner became the harbinger of doom in the film. In the Infinity Gauntlet comic book series, it was the Silver Surfer who was the messenger.

Wished they spent at least 5 minutes building up the arrival of the Black Order to Earth. There was no proper build-up. Banner shows up and warns the heroes, then a few minutes later the Black Order showed up.

Tony Stark and Dr. Strange bickering like children was a bit irksome because their conflict felt forced.

I got a laugh when Peter Parker asked Ned for a distraction and Ned shouts “We’re all going to die!” (which in the end is kinda true)

I inherently don’t like the concept of nanotech suits popping up out of thin air but damn, Iron Man’s Bleeding Edge suit is bad-ass. It’s so powerful that it could go toe-to-toe with Thanos for a short while.

(Spoiler Thoughts still under construction. Come back in a few hours.)

Didn't read, but I'm happy with your score. I'll read Fri AM or Thur night after my showing.

Haha. The bitch ticked UP from yesterday, nice.

I'm thinking it will settle in the mid 80s at the end.

I just came back from seeing it and I pretty much agree with everything you wrote. This is the best Avengers movie for me so far, but I wasn't overly impressed with the first 2.

Wish we had more Hulk screentime.

How important is the black panther movie to this story? I saw it but that movie seems to stand on its own. After rewatching age of ultron, I completely forgot Klauw was in that movie and helped make ultron, pretty cool connection for the MCU. Is Thor 3 more important? Im trying to gauge what I should watch after civil war tonight to get myself ready for IW tomorrow. Already watched the first 2 avengers.

You should definitely watch Black Panther and Thor: Ragnarok.

The ending of Thor: Ragnarok is basically the prologue for Infinity War. Black Panther is a must-watch, not because it is directly connected with Infinity War, but to get yourself acquainted with the various supporting characters which appear in Infinity War. Plus Black Panther is a good movie.

I haven’t seen IW yet, but it’s supposed to pick up where Thor 3 ended so that’s definitely up there in terms of importance for what to watch prior to IW.

Thank you sir, awesome review as always

If I only have time for one, I imagine civil war would be the most important of the 3 right? I can watch the last 10 minutes of ragnarok to get caught up on that. So far I have rewatched Iron man, Avengers 1 and 2, and want to watch at least one more. I just watched black panther so Im pretty fresh on that one.

Also without spoliers, how much is spider man in this?

Thanks.

Civil War is a great movie but honestly it doesn't really have a strong connection with the Thanos story also. It is significant in terms of knowing what happened to the Avengers team due to the Sokovia Accords.

Spider-Man is probably in it 38%?

@Dragonlordxxxxx OK, I got to ask: how much of a Bad Ass is Thanos? Do we finally have an MCU Big Bad who is genuinely impressive?
