I’m so confused reading this thread. Did I miss something Tom did to lose the trust of so many in here? If it was the fight itself then I’m at a loss, this wasn’t an Aljo or even a Weidman situation. If it was something else then I must have been out to lunch because these reactions aren’t adding up for me.

It's a combination of things. Aspinall was hyped up around here as the supreme HW badass, who was gonna own the HW division and would absolutely destroy Jon Jones. Then he couldn't handle the dude Jones beat like a child, immediately quit on a foul, and won't stop whining about his eyes. He's even got his daddy chiming in on his behalf to defend him.

I'm sure he's a alright guy, who may indeed be in a tough spot with an injury. However, the way he's gone about it, has been less than stellar. He's made himself look like a crybaby.

Well, he's been through like 3 specialists who said there was no serious damage, but sure, perhaps he has career ending eye injuries. We'll have to wait and see.

Yeah I’m seeing comments to this effect but that still doesn’t add up to me. They’re being put forth as though they’re connected and I’m supposed to add them up and be outraged, but they aren’t really connected.

Who he was hyped up to be is hardly his responsibility to justify. He won a bunch of fights, that got him where it did and we all saw it so I don’t see how that somehow indebts him to anyone.

Styles make fights. Jon was obviously incredibly impressive in his win over Gane, but the fact that Tom didn’t dispatch him in the same way doesn’t at all mean that he wouldn’t beat Jones. I don’t personally think he would, I would favor Jones, but the MMAMATH doesn’t really hold here. Really the biggest issue was that Jones was holding the belt hostage, I think that’s what Tom was most upset about, and despite the fact that I think Jones has arguably the best resume of anyone in the history of the sport and regardless of whether I think Jones would win if they were to fight, Jones was holding the belt and not fighting which would bother contenders in any division.

And seriously? Won’t stop whining about his eyes? Eye injuries are incredibly serious and it’s a little dehumanizing to say that he’s a fighter so he should be able to handle it. Eye injuries affect fighters long after their careers are over. While it’s certainly admirable to behave like Bisping did and basically keep quiet about losing his eye to the sport, I hardly think it’s fair to EXPECT that as the standard.

All in all I think fighters are getting smarter about how they approach eye pokes as fouls. As has been mentioned in this thread, the numbers for guys who take a serious eye pokes and continue are pretty bad, and it feels incredibly detached for us as fans to just expect fighters to absorb that sort of foul knowing how much it decreases their chances of winning and just soldier on in a sport where losing a fight can be a career altering event that some fighters never recover from, and that’s saying nothing of the impact of the aforementioned injury itself.

So yeah, I’m giving him some leeway here. I think he deserves it.

I like watching tom fight, was excited to see him fight more. But he didn't so now i'm not excited. Noone deserves anything. They get paid a bunch of money to punch people for my entertainment. If i'm not entertained i don't give an f about anyone and the only thing they deserve is for me to talk trash so that i'm still entertained. jokes aside. Yea people are poopin on him hard for getting fingered. Tough times for tom. I hope he comes back super angry and crushes people. But i have my doubts. a lot of it is people trying to jump on a bandwagon, like hating on Tom Aspinall is a thing to do on the internet to look cool. Some take it a step further and craft an entire online persona out of hating on a guy who had one even round and got poked in the eye. some people don't know how to think for themselves.
