As a power puncher why Rumble failed while Ngannou thrived?

Yesterday I was watching a highlight reel of Rumble & this thought came into my mind. Why is that despite having more well rounder overall skills, Rumble failed? He had better boxing, his speed was better, he had good kicks, serviceable to great wrestling & Ngannou had none of them.

So in case of Rumble you can't say that he just came in every fight with a puncher's chance. In any kind of fight he had more than that. Same thing can't be said about Ngannou.

But one always remained the bridesmaid & other one won the most prestigious MMA title & also defended it as well.

I'll tell you why he failed.

He tried to prove that he can wrestle against DC, soon realized that DC's wrestling was too good and then just gave up.

First, he didn’t “fail.” He just wasn’t as good as Jones and Cormier, probably the two best LHW ever.

Second, he competed in a normal division. HW is not like any other division. Not only is the talent pool much more shallow but it’s possible to have a huge size advantage. There is no Lesnar-Randy or Francis-Stipe type of matchup anywhere else. Imagine Rumble if everyone he fought was a natural middleweight. That’s basically the situation with Francis.

Also, Francis still lost a couple of fights. He just stuck around long enough for Stipe to get old (and in fairness his own skills improved), where Johnson retired before DC and Jon.

Well its how things go, A top heavy division cannot stay strong forever. Once DC, Rumble, Gus, jones, bader felll out of the division it went to shit over night.

Basically the ~30 year old crowd in that division (rakic, jiri, reyes, ankelaev,Hill) Will probably be the future of the division

Rumble did himself a terrible disservice by ever trying to make it to 170. By making it that far down in weight he wasn't much bigger than other bigger guys for the division but his cardio was shit and he didn't have the strength advantage he wanted.

He's also one of the bigger front runners in the history of the sport. It was all great for him when opponents got KO'ed (or scared) by his punches. When they could withstand his assault and fight back he crumbled.

ngannou lost to stipe bad the first time and fought a manouriched 230lbs stipe after 3 wars with dc and dana buried stipe now until he's 70 before he gives him a rematch so idk about "ran through".
DC is a horrible matchup for ngannou too no way in hell he can beat him
