ive always been a hobby artist. I don’t intend to be more than that. But I enjoy drawing comic book art and I’ve recently been getting back into it. I’ve learned that a great tool to have is a drawing tablet. Anyone know of the best/most beginner, user-friendly drawing tablet for this style of art? Because I don’t know jack shit.

My advice is don't buy a tablet. Draw on scrap paper. If you want to post it, just photograph it. Scanning images can lead to piracy; there's few things more aggravating to see your artwork being sold on t-shirts and mugs you did not authorize.

When you're serious about drawing, then the right tablet will make itself obvious to you.

The reason I want one is I understand it cuts out a lot of the work of modifying pictures and you can resize pictures as needed. That way I can storyboard more easily. Does this sound accurate?

Sure but I have a feeling it'll be money down the drain. Drawing and redrawing isn't necessarily helped with shortcuts, least of all a tablet.

Sounds like you want a combination of programs like Poser (something that supplies 3D armatures that you can draw on top of) and Clip Studio Paint (which has a great perspective tool).

Interesting. Are this programs used on drawing tablets?

.... yes.

My advice..

TS,

Get a Black book and not anything digital..

Learn to draw yourself and not let a computer do everything for you..

You sicken me...

Lol - the tablet doesn't have programs in it. If you wanna use Microsoft Word with a tablet and keyboard you can.

Before I had a tablet I drew with pencil and paper, scanned into Illustrator and used the pen tool for ink. It worked well enough.

He's referring more to the Cintiq than the Intuous.

That might be all I’m looking for.

? I use a Cintiq and it's an Intuous with a screen. No programs on that either - it just acts as a 2nd screen for the computer. Unless you're referring to a standalone like the Companion, which still runs Windows but costs WAY more than I'd ever recommend to a hobbyist anyway.

.... yes.

Now you understand my level of incompetence. I’m not very tech savvy. But I’d like to actually make a comic book (just for fun. Maybe as a gift for my wife or something). I can hand draw the whole thing, but usually I get pissed halfway through and give up. If I can modify the work more easily on a tablet, that may help.

Not a comic book, but I've illustrated four children's books and I did them before I had a tablet - hand-drawn, scanned, pen tool in Illustrator and coloring in Photoshop.

If you get pissed halfway through drawing by hand, you're gonna get pissed halfway through drawing on a tablet. You still have to draw, lol.

Maybe. But here is an example of a situation that I hope it helps with:

I draw a picture and ink it. After inking it I realize “Shit! I don’t like how that color looks. Well guess I just have to throw this picture out. And since it’s the third picture on this page storyboard, I have to throw the whole page out!!”

I’m hoping with a tablet, or some similar resource, instead I can just erase and correct or resize a portion that I didn’t like...etc.

Will need pics of that comic book pr0n you've been working on, before giving proper advice

You're overlooking the point that when he says tablet, we're thinking of a Wacom but he's thinking more of an actual computer. (And there is a Cintiq model now that operates independently, for, I assume, impressing people at the Starbucks.)

It's not going to work that way. A tablet will give you too many options and zero discipline. You need to work out your artwork in stages. Start with rough thumbnails, then refine with each pass.

Cut and paste compositions together, if you're worried that a ruined panel 3 spoils the entire page.

You missed my phantom edit on the standalone, but to paraphrase: If he's looking for an entire standalone tablet just to draw as a hobby I wouldn't bother - way too expensive for just that.

Maybe. But here are some of the things I’m hoping it helps with.

Then you definitely need the software first. Like SA said, Clip Studio Paint is good for what you want to do. I think it's like $50. If you're hell bent on trying a tablet you could try an Intuous Comic, which runs a bit less than $100 - but keep in mind you're going to have to get used to drawing while looking at the screen and not your drawing surface.

If you want on the cheap you can get Huion. On the expensive Wacom.

Other options that you don't have to connect to a computer are like MS Surface (pro or book) or that big iPad. Not even going to tell you to bother getting a wacom studio.

If you are doing it for comics then Manga Studio is pretty cheap and probably best option for comics.
Krita is free.
Photoshop is more.

Lot's of people import sketches into the computer and do all the painted and etc from there. You are also going to want to learn how to flat.

This guy has a good YT

PS the tablets that are not a screen can suck a D. I will not recommend them.

Aright, here is what I’ve gathered so far. I don’t need (and probably don’t want a tablet unless I’m looking to pay a lot and get more serious). Instead there are options for simply hand drawing sketches and then scanning them to the computer to modify in programs more applicable to my needs like Illustrator...
