Arpaio announces Senate bid

<36> still, if oprah can run for pres.....

Rep. McSally announced a major announcement next Monday. She's likely running as well. All this means is McSally gets the establishment votes while Arpaio and Kelli Ward split the further right voter block and McSally wins the primary.

Where this gets interesting is McCain's failing health. He's not back in DC yet following the Christmas Break and isn't making public appearances as he skipped the Arizona SotS address, his wife there instead.

If McCain resigns before July, than there is a special election for his seat the same time the Flake seat is up. Meaning Arpio, McSally and Ward could decide between two seats.

Assuming McCain stays in the Senate through July though, this race likely is won by McSally and will face Krysten Sinema in the GE.

Arpaio is Roy Moore in Arizona. Might be able to win a head-up primary against anybody, but would lose the GE. But there is no top-two run off in Az, which will save McSally and cost Arpaio.

Joe Arpaio Announces Bid for Senate in Arizona

ALBUQUERQUE — Joe Arpaio, the polarizing 85-year-old immigration hard-liner pardoned by President Trump after a conviction of criminal contempt, announced on Tuesday that he is running in Arizona for the United States Senate.

The move by Mr. Arpaio, who just six months ago faced the prospect of a jail sentence before the pardon, upends the race to replace Senator Jeff Flake, a Republican who abandoned his 2018 re-election campaign after coming under criticism from Mr. Trump.

The contenders for the seat include Representative Kyrsten Sinema, a centrist Democrat, and Kelli Ward, a conservative Republican and former state senator who aligns herself with Mr. Trump. Mr. Arpaio, the former sheriff of Maricopa County, which include Phoenix, lost his own re-election bid for that post in 2016 to Paul Penzone, a Democrat and Phoenix police officer.

“Being a U.S. senator is a little different than being the sheriff, because you can do a lot of things in the U.S. Senate, and I have many plans, believe me,” Mr. Arpaio told The Washington Examiner in announcing his bid. “I have a lot to offer. I’m a big supporter of President Trump.”

confirmed the announcement on Twitter.

Mr. Arpaio quickly drew criticism after the announcement. He had come under fire repeatedly as sheriff over tactics used to crack down on Latino immigrants, and was found guilty of criminal contempt in connection to a case that caused tempers to flare in Arizona and around the country. Plaintiffs claimed Mr. Arpaio had regularly violated the rights of Latinos by racially profiling and detaining them.

“You lost the most populous Republican county in Arizona,” said Representative Ruben Gallego, Democrat of Arizona, in a missive on Twitter referring to the 2016 race for sheriff in Maricopa County. “Just give up this fundraising scam now.”

Kinda sounds like someone we know...<{1-17}>

Who right in their mind would elect a 85 year old?

Yeah, all this country needed was an older, more senile, more openly racist version of Trump who has also had his own reality tv show..

and is a pardoned criminal, right?

In reality, this is great for Democrats. Arizona was already only a marginally red state and Trump only won it by like 6 points. Meanwhile, Arpaio is a Roy Moore-esque disaster of a candidate who will either (a) win the primary and most likely lose the general, or (b) go after the currently leading candidate McSally for her not being hard on immigration and do real damage to her for the general.

God,...this guy is an attention whore!!!
he has costed arizona millions of dollars.
He’s too damn old and incompetent, he is an old racist douche.
I’m from Arizona and I fucking despite this asshole, he went after the Latino community (he said ilegals) put US citizens in jail cuz they look latino and got his ass sued left and right, costing us the tax payers millions of dollars.
But fucking child molester where happy running in the streets.
Nice way to drain the swamp LOL

I’m not up on my Arizona politics but have to believe the DNC is writing him a thank you card.

Yeah, because he was in a position he was elected to and was unfairly prosecuted by a liberal judge with no grasp of the law.

He for sure seems qualified to be a leader:

"his attorneys argued that the violations were a result of poor communication and a lack of understanding by Arpaio and his command staff."
