News Ariel thinks Tony is at a crossroad (12 wins in his last 13)

As much as I agree with you TS that Tony will out the pressure and probably win, a loss here will be a big set back.

Tony took an epic beating about six months ago and has gone through wars most people don't walk away from. It has to add up some time. Not sure if this is the one but it's coming up quick.

Regardless, Ariel needs to watch his tone. War Tony.

I kinda agree. Tony is not a young guy and even though he strung together an amazing run, he’s coming off of one one of those beatings that can change a fighter. Hope he comes back and looks good but who knows.

This is true for several factors. If he loses he will be out of the title picture. Also no one knows how he will be after that tough fight with Gaethje, if he gets KO easily that could mean his chin is finally cracked from all the damage accumulated.

People use age, but I think it's more due to damage that will be the issue. He can age overnight but it seems like the cardio and age isn't his issue with his recent loss to Gaethje, and it's more from damage since his weakness has been fighters with better boxing - and Gaethje can crack.

This fight will see if that fight affected him in a negative way and if he can rebound back into title contention or slip into the rankings trying to climb back for another shot.

Tony turns 37 in a couple of months so If he loses this fight chances are he's probably never touching the belt; it's sad but its a young man's game, especially in the lighter weight classes

Guy loses one fight in several years and now he’s at a cross road.

He’s going to melt Oliveira to the body because Charles keeps a high guard and doesn’t keep a tight defense. Charles also has shown to wilt in the past and Tony makes guys quit.

Ariel is a shameless drama Queen but he’s not totally wrong. If Tony smashes Chuck, everyone will remember the weird weight cut and opponent change and write off the Gaethje fight as a bad night. If he gets beat up by Chuck, he’ll start to look a lot like time has caught up with him.

All these ufc stooges are obsessed with pushing out the most entertaining and athletic fighters in the company so they can replace them with low paid bums.

he is. cause if he loses again that be 2 in a row he 37 wih alot of mileage on his tires an might never be in a postion to become champion.

a winn will put him in postion to fight the to maybe he crowned the next champ.

it the same position the loser of dustin vs conor will be as well.

Don't care for Ariel but he is kinda right on this one.. Tony is getting old, took a hell of a beating and has had some bad injuries.

I can't fucking stand Ariel and I don't think he really gets fighting at all or even particularly likes it.

That being said I totally agree with him here. In fact I think it's laughable to think otherwise.

People have said the same about fighters like Overeem and Arlovski. And those are HW fighters...

Lets just wait to see what happens. Tony is a madman, I wouldn't be surprised if he came out looking like nothing was ever wrong.

He's right.
Can't go 0-2 in 2020 as you close in on 37. That would essentially shut the door on any possibility of a title shot ever.
Must win fight for el cucuy

Ariel Helwani has to be a Sherdogger with that logic. His hair was also at a crossroad in 2003

Slight Power!

Well, Ariel is not wrong, Tony in fact is at a crossroad. He was dismantled brutally in his last fight, and his age already entered the concern territory, he is 36. At that age, a loss against an opponent from the top 6-10 territory is bad news. He had and amazing run, but his last top performance was against Lee, three years ago (after that he defeated washed up Pettis and Cerrone).
There was a thread few days ago about the best fighter who never won a belt and I put Tony on that list (no, I don´t consider those fake shitty "interim" belts for real). But to be honest, for his next fight I have Oliveira.
So yeah, if Tony defeats Oliveira he is into the mix, but a loss would be bad news for him.

As a Tony fan, I do kind of ag

Tony hasn’t fought a lower top 15 in 6 or 7 years. As a current top 3, if he lost to Charles in a competitive fight, why would he go all the way back to fighting out of the top 10 immediately??
Oliviera is #7 right now. If Tony loses, he might fall out of top5 and would probably fight someone ranked 8-15 next. Maybe Islam? Poor man’s Khabib

I never said it will be this time, I'm saying a decline is coming and I wouldn't be surprised if it's sooner rather than later. I genuinely hope Tony stays at a high level for a long time.

As for Andrei and Alistair there are a lot of variables that play into why they're still doing well in the UFC HW division, but neither are remotely close to where they once were. Andrei also isn't fighting guys near the top anymore.

He is in a very unique position though. I kinda see Ariels point. He wins, he is right back in the picture for a title. Especially given the current state of the LW division. He loses, he can pretty much kiss that belt goodbye for a few years. Lets not forget Tony is 36 with tons of damage received. We'll see what happens.

I agree with the point. He loses, especially if a bad lose like v Justin, his completely out of title picture. However a win and he case a for that title fight he deserves.

He is right. Did he lose because he started getting worse being in the wrong side of 35, or did he have one bad night?

This is why it is a crossroad fight. It was shocking how he lost, I don't think many people saw him getting dominated like that. If father time has caught up his basically making money fights against middle of the pack for rest of career.
