Are you sad the UFC has become more popular?

We all love the UFC.

But do we actually want it to become more popular?

I went to a UFC event here in KC.

The center was propably less than half full, but I still had a blast.

There is something to say about liking something that isn’t quite fully mainstream yet.

I’ve seen mma become more popular since I started ten years ago, but am somewhat glad it hasent reached NFL or NBA levels yet.

As weird as it sounds, in some ways I’m sad that it’s gottem as popular as it is currently.

And I can imagine the few actual old diehards that have been mma fans for over 20 years have noticed an even bigger change.

How about you Sherdogger?

I would love to talk MMA outside of sherdog. I like MMA because I enjoy it not because it's underground or a niche sport. I'd love for it to become super popular.

It’s less popular than the TUF era. You couldn’t walk 10 feet without seeing a new BJJ gym that went out of business in 3 months or some little kid with the Chuck Mohawk. I never hear anyone talk about mma anymore

MMA seemed way more popular to me years ago when GSP, Brock, Anderson were champs. Every bar used to play the fights, now almost no where does unless Conor is fighting. Ratings are way down and so are PPV buys.

go to a bellator event instead

i'm sure their events are usually half empty

The only bad significant change is these fighters don't have to "fight for MMA". They need to get the most out of it now.

Gotta give you one thing bro, the threads you start are at least original.

I like watching combat sports

I am comfortable with that and don't need "my special little side thing"

So, no, i don't mind at all

I started watching about 12 years ago. I think it is less popular than it was back then..... Early TUF & UFC 100 was when UFC peaked in terms of broad public acceptance. Now less people give a shit about the majority of events. Casuals only tune in to one or two events a year.

I totally get what you mean about not wanting something you love to become popular, because it changes it. But I don’t feel this way about mma (yet). I love having big fight parties at my house for good ppv cards, rather than watching an event by myself. I love having more options for bars if I want to go out and watch it. I love the tv content that has been developed like the UFC Tonight shows and the prefight shows and the post fight shows and televised weigh ins, the countdown shows, etc. I like being able to talk about mma a little with my wife’s friend’s husbands or coworkers, rather just having to talk about golf or the stock market or some shit. None of this would be possible if it was still niche.

I wish it was more popular, when i was growing up i started to realize how ball sports are stupid and i struggle to get excited about them nowadays

what Eddie said in his the pre-fight stuff vs Dustin is true. There's fighters and there are athletes.

Sport is evolving so there's more athletes involved now. With training methods advancing, sports medicine, the amount of footage available, they should be better.

But the guys who used to fight back in the day couldn't have been in it for the money. There was none to be made in comparison to today. They had many natural born fighters.

I kind of agree, but don't think that's fair.

Put some of those "old skool" guys in today's landscape. Their priorities would change too.
