Some parents choose to be encouraging, and tell their kids they can do anything. Most of those kids grow up to be losers.
However,
Jake the snake Roberts wanted to be an architect. But it didn't impress his dad. So Jake wrestled in a local show to make his dad proud (his dad was a pro wrestler). And Jake went up his dad afterwards and said "so what did you think?" his dad said, "I'm ashamed of you. You'll never amount to anything."
Jake's response:
... and I said 'by god, if it's the last thing I do, I'm gonna shove this business up his rear.' And guess what? I did it. And guess what? It didn't matter"
In Jake's case, he was actually motivated by spite, and that took him to the top of his field.
So while it's certainly the meaner path to take, is it actually good for kids to have people that doubt them?
