I have noticed some AWFUL TV movies/straight to DVD that are terrible with no real plot and lethargic acting. It makes me wonder, are these type of movies a money laundry scheme?

I mean, who the hell buys these movies when they get to no views on top of a really badly created movies?

Not saying every movie should Heath Ledger/Joker level acting but some of these movies that get pumped out make no sense at all.

Straight to DVD action movies are a guilty pleasure of mine

So I guess you can blame me for some of them

I'm sure there are some studios that function on laundering, but most of them are just low budget money grabs.

A lot of the time it's people with some cash who think they have an idea for a movie but have no experience at all and they hire some people who won't say anything about how bad it is because they're getting paid. I've seen this first hand

I think it's more a case where there are outlets for really bad films to be distributed now. In some cases like the shitty new Steven Seagal movies they might be turning a small profit and in some cases it might be bad producers taking a loss but they would have taken one anyway and at least people can see their abortions now.

A lot of these movies are able to make their money back solely through international pre-sales.

For instance, most of us may not give a shit about Steven Seagal here in the United States, but he's still very popular in many countries overseas.

The money is needed to pay Seagal to not unleash his deadly stuff on the world. Every day you continue to live is by the good graces of the sensei.

Probably not ! but would not be shocked if a few of them have been schemes to clean otherwise dirty money

Plenty of these movies are getting picked up on netflix.

They just need content. Ill be looking up movies on there and see shit thats like 3.3 stars on imdb. Why would netflix pay for that?

Uwe Boll's movies have been admitted to being mostly a money laundering scheme for the mob.

They make 60% of their costs back in net profit, and they profit 2-3 as much then if they laundered it through another method.

There's a lot of crazy things going on with financing of movies. I recently watched an interview / documentary about the original "Revenge of the Nerds" movie and everybody in there states that the movie was a "write-off" and it was never intended for it to ever make any money. So I think there might actually be something to what OP is stating.

Here's the documentary for those who are interested... pretty cool overall to be honest. Basically nobody wanted to do the role because none of the actors wanted to get portray a nerd.

This.

WWE makes their films on the cheap straight to dvd because they know they’ll make a profit with world wide sales.

All the action stars of the 80s can probably do the same (produce and star) and make decent sales worldwide.
