i just recently purchased an AK-47 the past week on the strong recommendation from a friend of mine who is a gun enthusiast. I don't have much of a gun background so I am new to the old AR vs. AK debate which I realize is basically a Ford vs. Chevy debate. I would just like Mayberry's input on this topic, I've done a search but nothing came up.

About a week in, haven't shot my AK yet, but I know I am going to enjoy it once I do. So what say you Mayberrians? AR or AK? Which would you prefer if money is not a factor? Which do you prefer for home defense? Target Practice? When SHTF? Which do you prefer period? Thanks for your answers.

They are both good platforms and fun to shoot. The AR is generally more accurate and very reliable. The AK is less accurate (MOM vs MOA) and also reliable, but it is overrated in that department. Home defense is a .45 or a 9MM, rifles have way to much penetration to really consider for this. If SHTF I would want an AK since they are stupid easy to maintain and have no small parts to really lose, could also find ammo anywhere in the world. Finally I prefer bullpups, specifically my Tavor. I would buy an AK over an AR just because I have been shooting AR's for over 10 years. To be fair I have never shot an AK on semi-auto, so I may have rose tinted glasses when thinking about shooting one again.

You really can't go wrong with either in the end. I would recommend staying away from the Magpul AK's accessories since they have a nice reputation of breaking easily. Make sure you take at least 200 rounds with you when you go shooting, they go fast but they don't go for cheap.

*If price truly wasn't an issue, I would order one of these with a 20'' barrel.

I own both and the ar is my go to but there is just something fun about shooting the ak. Ar is more customizable so I feel it wins on that alone

haha, this remind me of golden eye. bypass both and get yourself this:

AK looks better and has the more powerful round. It's also more reliable by the piston operation.

AR is lighter, more accurate, and far more customizable .It's rounds are also smaller compared to ak47,so you should be able to carry around double the ammo.

I like the AK.

I'll take a nice piston AR over an AK in nearly all situations.

What happened to the gun forum?sherdog get taken over by progressive sissies?

Thing is though, you could likely get two ak's for the price of one.plus there is the known reliability. The army hasn't even converted to piston ar yet as far as I know.

WTF would you want that for? Accuracy is good for what, 175 yards?

lol, relax. i don't know shit about guns. was just making a joke, because that gun was in golden eye, just like the ar-15 was.

Yes, AK's are cheaper. Your criteria appears to be different than mine though.

You're right, I don't believe the army has converted to a piston AR system, but I know the SEAL's prefer them for a 5.56. Most use a modified HK 416.

AK-47 for me

Better looking (imo), larger round, very durable, easy as hell to clean, its the "bad guy" gun and I love the way it sounds.

if money is not a problem I would go with scar heavy.

I just don't like this modifying of ar.need to just ditch it and start a new bullpup.
