Have y'all seen this? For a guard that's supposed to be limited to sport BJJ, Aoki uses the DLR in a way I've never seen -- to deliver a brutal barrage of kicks. Pretty sweet (it's at the very start of the vid)!

Aoki is truly a stud. I can't even think of an instance seeing the DLR guard used in MMA nevertheless with strikes.

Japanese fighter fighting in japan can do no wrong.

If your interested watch how fast they remove JZ's hands from the ropes then watch what happens when Aoki grabs the ropes.

That said, Aoki is absolutely amazing sometimes.

Ya I was way impressed with his striking from DLR guard. He was actually pushing the pace from a butt scoot position...

Imanari shows a calf lock from DLR in this video: YouTube - Submission Spirits - Masakazu Imanari Leglocks

I swear I've seen Imanari set up toe holds and heel hooks from DLR, but I can't be sure as I don't feel like going through tons of videos.

His length and flexibility at that weiight, coupled with his sick grappling skills, give him tools that others can only ponder.

that was sick seeing the de la riva guard used effectively in MMA
like someone else was saying earlier in here I'm pretty sure I've seen Imanari set up a couple leg locks from DLR before but cant remember where

That was really a beautiful display of the DLR guard. Somehow people lump DLR guard with spider and xguards, but it really seems to be effective in MMA if done right.

I am glad someone brought this up, it was the first thing I noticed in the fights few days ago, while most were just talking about his rubber/closed guards.

I think kicks are allowed to the head as long as neither knee of the guy receiving it are on the mat.

    And Aoki RULES!
