The most fucked up part about this series is that there are multiple real-life counterparts to every character's back story in Korea today. The Game itself may be fictional, but the class struggle and hopelessness are very real.
I still remember reading about the brutal beatdown by Korean riot police when employees of Ssamgyong Motors went on strike against the mass laid-off back in 2009, or when a bunch of Korean hospitals were busted for Malpractice when the well-known surgeons accepted the money from their patients and then outsouced their work to lesser-known surgeons, or when nurses and office employees sometimes did surgery when all the doctors are busy.
People who are taken advantaged of because they are illegal immigrants from Third World countries like Ali or North Korean defectors like Sae-byeok are too numerous to count, just like corporate swindlers like Sang-woo are dime a dozen.
Lastly, Korea's household personal debts is now at an outstanding $1.8 Trillion, higher than the country's national output itself. Countless of people are drowning in debt, and willing to do just about anything.
When us viewers from the West watch this series, we recognize this Korean social commentary on an academic level, but for viewers in Korea, it's going to hit home, because they all know a Gi-hun, Sang-woo, Sae-byeok, or Ali in real life.
Finished it today. It’s a pretty blatant “Saw” ripoff.
You literally have not watched it.I remember being this naive.
It's pretty bad and the dialois terrible. So just finished the first episode. It's Korean and quite an interesting plot. Where close to 500 people in debt agree to go play a game where winner takes millions in prize money. If you fail the games you die.
He's right, you should stick to things you have literally any idea about.LULZ. Yellow belts can be so adorable.
There are three articles. All of them make strong arguments. And the guy who wrote it says it is. But what does he know, amirite?

"I wanted to write a story that was an allegory or a fable about modern capitalist society, something that depicts an extreme competition, somewhat like the extreme competition of life."
The writer literally said it's an allegory about capitalism.Every source you are posting is very very left leaning. They are all taught in school to view shit through a marxist lense.
SG is actually a critique of socialism. See the VIPs are like the oligarchs....the rich elite that run everything and have all the money.
Now the contestants there were poor people in a capitalist society. THEN they had that capitalist society stolen from them.... they had all their shit taken, given all the same clothes, the same food no matter their physical size or sex and anything the contestants want to do like go to the bathroom they have to get permission from guys with guns....oh at in this forced equity most of them die....getting shot by the guys with guns with their stomachs empty.
Again, when you have a country that is splity...and you are SK and capitalist and NK which is communist....I think you have a better appreciation of capitalism.
Have you ever met someone from SK??? I have. They are fucking as pro capitalist as you can get.
I mean, if SG is a critique of capitalism then so is New Jack City ffs.
Squid Game is definitely an allegory about capitalism.

before capitalism people still bought shit with money.
What do you think the ancient greeks and romans did?
I watched a bunch of YT videos trying to say Parasite was a critique of capitalism (maybe it was wisecrack) but when I watched it I thought not really.
Squid Game could just as well be seen as a critique of socialism. There is one pie....one pot of money they must all share.
A common saying is that socialism believes there is one pie and everyone needs a slice of that pie. Capitalism says lets buy more pies.
The SG guys with the guns are like a commie government handing out the food to players...all split evenly. They even say they made it all fair and everone gets the same treatment and same stuff....just like socialism.
Plus this is south korean....I don't think koreans cry about capitalism as much as we in the west do.....remember a place called North Korea that is communist and sort of wants to kill them?
lol, why? because Medium says so???? LOL.
^ I mean,shit, it Scarface a critique of capitalism???
The rich asshole VIPs are just that...rich assholes. Rich assholes wanting to buy nasty things is not a critique of capitalism....it is that rich assholes can pay for shit like this game.
you can have poor assholes and rich assholes in a movie and not have it be a critique. It is not positing that anything is better than capitalism.
It is not saying anything is wrong with it. No one is saying why can't we have socialism and just share everything.
I think it is just a bunch of westerners trying to read their shit into a culture they don't understand at all.

Maybe that's why it's so popular. Can be interpreted both ways, or as commentary on human nature. Or even just as a gory fun time.Yeah, the writer said it was a critique of capitalism and human nature.
However, it looks like he's also made it a critique of communism.
Capitalism - All the 'players' are deeply in debt beyond any chance they could ever pay it back, and are so desperate they'd be willing to play the games to basically win the lottery. ($38 million)
But within the games, which the majority of the show takes place, its a much closer critique of communism.
-All the players wear the same clothes of the same colors.
-Players are killed by inhuman and masked guards without any hesitation or remorse. (The state)
-Players are awarded shitty food for 'winning' a game. (Doing a good job in their work) They even fought over food.
-Infighting among the players, including murder, isn't discouraged and possibly encouraged by the fact that lowers any threat or competition.
-The onlookers of the games, wearing Rothchild-like masks, have a complete lack of humanity and view the death and suffering of the players as entertainment. (Common with totalitarian rulers)

Yeah I really liked some of the characters. Episode 6 got me right in the feels, especially the dynamic between the two girls.I'm thinking its popular because its just a damn good show with quality character development with shock factor to propel the drama.
Its not even that gory in comparison to most horror movies.
I'd say its more related to Hunger Games than any other horror franchise, but with its own style mixed in than the other things it borrows from other franchises.
Wow just wow does your back hurt after those mental gymnastics?Every source you are posting is very very left leaning. They are all taught in school to view shit through a marxist lense.

I loved the show but I agree with this, this premise doesn't seem like something that will hold up in a second season. If they try to showcase a second game, it will be stale/repetitive. If they try to go into more of the backstory of the games or a revenge arc, it will probably fall flat. Was interesting. Thinking season 2 will suck tho.
Nah he would have been consumed by guilt.Sang woo should of won. He would have enjoyed the money
Nah he would have been consumed by guilt.
That's why he killed himself. He was a piece of shit, but a piece of shit with a conscience. If he played Ali like that AND killed his childhood friend, no way he enjoys that blood money
