I trained at Gracie Miami for a year. $180 unlimited grappling, throwing, striking, sparring and self-defense techniques. mon-sat. some days, you can even do up to 3 hours straight of classes. The instructors are Helio Gracie black belts Pedro and Gui Valente . Both really nice guys with amazing technique.

I checked out Rillion's school. It's the same rate but it's sport jiu-jitsu. I guess they focus more on competition and point jiu-jitsu. The school was tiny. Pics of Renzo and Roger adorn the walls, I guess Renzo was there not so long ago. I heard Rillion has the best guard of the Gracies. Too bad a guard is not all you need in a fight.

I think if you would like to be an all-around fighter, ready for anything, street or otherwise, go to Gracie Miami. If you would like to compete in no-striking jiu-jitsu tournaments and win lots of medals and trophies go to Rillion's school on Coral Way.

I may be biased because I received such good instruction from the Valentes at Gracie Miami, Helio visits there quite often too. The only reason I stopped going was because of my hectic job schedule now.

If there is a person that's actually trained at both schools they might have a better opinion than I. But I doubt it, since they just opened up Rillion's school a few months ago.

If you think all Rillion can offer is sport BJJ then you are sadly mistaken. Sport BJJ accomplishments aside, just looking at experience, how many "street fights" do you think the Valentes have been involved in? Rillion, Renzo, Ralph, and Ryan had many adventures (along with Relson) growing up, literally building their reputation by fighting from the streets, amateur, up until they became pros. I'm interested to hear what makes people think the Valentes are more certified to teach self-defense ahead of these battle-tested guys.

Good point SakuFan

...not just fights, but when I was looking for a school in S. FL I was looking not just at the certification of the instructors but what accomplishments either thier students or they themselvs had. I think the Valente's rode the Gracie name and started Gracie Miami before MMA or BJJ made it big in S. FL, but now there are schools (Rillions, FFA, ATT, Popovich, etc) that all have Pro MMA fighters, ADCC vets, etc.

I don't know why anyone would still go to Gracie Miami to learn to fight with these other schools around.

all gracie jj derives from self-defense!!!how many valente students have competed at world class level and won at whatever the idiom was ?mma,jj nogi, etc;etc;i have done privates with rillion and took second at the pan-ams,first at the naga worlds gi and no gi!!!valentes have a great school but rillion is on a whole different level !!!ask the valentes or royce!!!ttt

Bro, although I appreciate the knowledge you have in "JJ culture" and all the good posts here, I have to disagree with you. You don't have to be in street fights to teach people how to fight in the street. Finding ways to improve someone's technical abillities is not learnt in teh street. You can be a hell of a street fighter and not neceassary a good teacher.
That doesn't mean that Rillion is not a good teacher in all the aspects of JJ, but rather that Valente borthers can be good teacher although they've probably never had a street fight.
I would rather learn from Garcia, then Ryan... :icon_chee

Good post. While Rillion may be a Gracie, that does not necessarily mean that he teaches every aspect of Gracie Jiu Jitsu. The Valentes are members of a very exclusive club, that being the small group of black belts who trained exclusively with and received their black belts directly from Helio Gracie. Bear in mind that when it comes to fighting with Jiu Jitsu, the buck stops with Helio. The Gracie Miami curriculum closely follows that which Helio himself teaches his students. It is based entirely on Self defense and effective fighting techniques and does not address the sporting aspect until much later. If I were to train anywhere in Florida, it would be at Gracie Miami.

This is the type of info I wanted.

I'm not interested in entering tournaments being that I am a little "older" and will also be a beginner in BJJ:redface: . I am looking for a school that focuses more on the self defense/martial art aspect of Jiu jitsu rather than the sport. Although I enjoy watching competion! From all the info that I have gathered, I believe that the two schools that most fit what I am looking for are Gracie Miami and Gracie Torrance. Especially Miami because I will be living there soon.:D

Btw- Are there any other BJJ schools like the two above that anyone can recommend?

Thanks Much!

It depends, how much can u afford to pay a month? J/K. I actually had a thai boxing instructor say this when I went to check out his gym. I answered, "around $60-70." and he said, "we'll make it $80 for now and increase it when you can afford to pay more, or after a couple of months." Needless to say I didnt go back.

As far as I know there are no other reputable instructors that teach a similar curriculum to that at Torrance or Miami.

The reason why you won't see any Valente students as champions in any mma events or any jiu-jitsu sporting events, is because they feel when you train for these events with rules, you are seriously asking for trouble when you get in a real street-fight with no rules. They do not compete in any way, shape or form. yet, I have seen many Pro-Fighters and Renzo students from New York come to the Valente school and be completely blown away. You are training full on self-defense, you know, the kind where a knee to the back of the head is something to look out for, hint, hint:icon_chee j/k Love you Renzo!

Helio just had a seminar there, this last week.

No, but seriously, I didn't want to come off hard on Rillion, he seemed like a nice guy and like I said, I have a biased opinion having never trained there. I sat through a whole class and it was very easy going as compared to the Valentes.

Apologies to any of you that got offended, I think ANY type of training is good to some extent. I'm not into the whole thing of bashing coaches or styles, didn't mean to come off that way.

Perhaps try the introductory free first class at both schools at feel it out. Good luck.

How do rillions classes run? i heard a lot of great things about him but i heard he doesnt speak english? does he have a translator or something.. but you cant go wrong with rillion OR helio gracie bbs, just a bit different curriculums i guess.

I have learned so much in a short time here. Thanks for the quality info guys. I wish I could win the lottery or be Nicolas cage and train full time with the hope of being an instructor someday.:D (teaching self defense style jiu jitsu)

But seriously.........

I recently bought helio gracie's book and it made me realize just how much of a "self defense" martial art it really is/can be.

I respect the hell out of all the "sport" jiu jitsu/MMA guys who put it all on the line. (someone like Nick Diaz) I still think the GOMI fight was the most entertaining fight of all time (including boxing).

Royce Gracie may not be the baddast guy in MMA anymore but I'm imagine he could still handle himself pretty well faced with a confrontation on the street. That's the kinda thing I find interesting (first few UFC's when it was jiu jitsu against the world). Of course, it's all inter-related and all the Gracie's are awesome, in my opinion. I can only imagine Renzo Gracie having to protect himself against a unsuspecting thug.

I'm a former high school wrestler (decent but not great), so I don't mind mixing it up a bit but I think the "Gracie Miami" style is definitely for me.

Thanks again.

ask the valentes have they worked out with rillion, their royces friends and rillion was in royces corner from ufc 1!!!ttt

Here is the breakdown:

Rillion is a legend in Jiu-Jitsu. He devoted his entire life to BJJ and is considered to be one of the best instructors in the Gracie family. He will teach self defense and competitive jiu-jitsu. He is the son of Carlos Gracie, he taught Helio Gracie jiu-jitsu. I pick him over Gracie Miami.

Gracie Miami- Learned directly from Helio Gracie. Never competed in BJJ but the Valente brothers seems to have a great school. They are the oldest BJJ school in Miami, and it is a very successful Academy. They train their students for self defense only and competitive jiu-jitsu is not what they are about. Competition is about finding out what your school is all about, I never competed but I am happy to know that my school( Renzo Gracie) has made great champions. It makes me feel that the jiu-jitsu taught at my school is effective. trust me I do know self defense, and my instructors teach self defense.
To say that "we don't compete in tournaments because we only train for self defense" is like Ninja schools back in the day, "We are a deadly style that only should be used for life and death self defense situations". As we saw in the early UFC's it didn't go down like that.

So the questions is, how good are the Valente Brothers? We will never know.

Pablo Popovitch - He started training jiu-jitsu at 4 years old with Rillion Gracie. He is actually cousins with some of the Gracie Family. I have been to his school and I liked it a lot. He has his competition team to represent him in tournaments and also great Fundamentals classes to teach new students self defense and jiu-jitsu . I trained there for 2 days and I was surprised to see how well structure his classes were. They presented me with a curriculum and I knew ahead of time everything I was going to learn on my 2 day visit.

Here what I worked on during my 2 day stay:
Monday

Self Sefense- Head Lock escapes, Closing the distance.
Self defense simulations, I never did that before and I liked it a lot.

Tuesday

We worked on passing the guard and controlling the opponent from side control.

All position were explained really well and I had a great time in the classes.

It seems like he is blending self defense with great fundamentals bjj positions.

Pablo is the most accomplished competitor of the 3, also was awarded 2006 NAGA instructor of the year. Great choice if you live around Fort Lauderdale.

They are by far the best BJJ schools in Miami/ Fort Lauderdale

You are lucky to start training on either 3....

Hope this helps...

I also highly recommend Pablo's place based on the two days I was able to attend their practices. Here's their web page:

http://www.bjjcenter.com/

I also attended Avellan's place. Here's their web page:

http://freestylefightingacademy.com/

They were doing construction when I visited. Avellan's place is open 24 hours and is close to both the airport and University. I felt more accepted by Pablo Popovitch's students, but that could be an artifact of when I visited.

You think he'd fare better than Royce?
