Was doing some no gi rolling tonight and in the middle of a roll felt something tweak in my elbow, but nothing really painful so I kept rolling. After time ran out I noticed my elbow felt strange so I looked down and it looked like there was a tennis ball inside my arm. The worst part was when I moved my arm and could feel the fluid swishing around.

Because of how fast and big it swelled I went to an immediate care place and got it checked out. They did an xray to make sure there was no fracture and said just to rest, ice, compress and elevate. The Dr. said the swelling should go down in a few days but if it doesn't hurt and I can tolerate it I'll be good to work out on it tomorrow if I want.

Anyone else experience this? How'd it heal for you?

Better question is has anyone NOT ruptured a bursa sac?

this is very common in the first couple years of training before you learn how to train right. It'll be good again in no time, just take it easy and use lots of ice.

get a topographic anti inflammatory to put on it. doctor gave me Pennsaid for my knee. swelling was there for weeks until i put this stuff on it

Yup. Last summer one of my training partners got me with a sweet hip throw during a life roll. For some reason (likely inexperience) I posted my arm out and the elbow hyper-extended. Swelled up instantly. I was out of commission for about 3 weeks. Sucked

I had my elbow popped to the point the guy I was rolling with heard it and it freaked them out. It was sore but I've never had swelling like that

I dont know what happened but I couldn't push a chair in, or open a door without a good bit of pain for a while. And I would get a sharp twinge from it occasionally which didn't fully go away for like 6 months. Now its perfect though...maybe bursa.. I have no idea.

Related question: has anyone ever had bursitis? Im suspicious that I have it in my knee. It doesnt hurt to run, jump, move etc but contact (such as kneeling on the mat) gives me a really sharp pain on my knee.

I have heard of multiple people having the same sort of pain when they had a small meniscus tear. Just another thought

you have bursitis. i got it a week before the Chicago Open, had to drop out. it felt like a hot amber was inside my knee. even wearing jeans hurt because the tight fabric touching it.

i took about 5 weeks off, put the Pennsaid stuff on it and iced the shit out of it. and when i did come back for the first 2 weeks i would start sparring from bottom and never go to my knees.

My coach had this. It took weeks of RICE to fix meanwhile he strictly worked from the guard. It sucked for him.

Yeah Ive just come back from 2 weeks off from bursitis in my hips. Saw a few doctors and a physio and they all just tried to treat the bursitis with voltaren (physio) and cortisone shots (doctor). Problem is, the bursitis would settle a little then flare back up again.

I finally got some relief through a chiropractor who diagnosed the bursitis just like the others but didnt stop there. |He told me the bursa dont just become inflammed for no reason, and when he examined me closer he found I had a muscle imbalance in my upper legs. My leg muscles had become stronger in the abduction movement through bjj but hadnt been strengthened in the opposite adduction movement, which led to tight illiotibial bands and bursitis.

I bought some thera bands and began a regime of strengthening the adductors and my bursitis has settled right down. Im training 2-3 times a week again and have minimal flare ups. Even been doing a few 8km jogs and have very little problems.

So if you have bursitis, DON'T JUST TREAT THE SYMPTOM but get your health professional to look deeper for the CAUSE.

Good luck, bursitis sucks!

Yes, had the same symptoms no joint pain just tender to the touch but it was not a sharp pain as much as a burning feeling. Time off of my knees and anti inflamitories took care of it. The bad thing is try doing bjj without being on your knees /:
