Anyone ever had molluscum contagiosum?

I've got a good idea where I got it from... I'm pretty sure the club I train with when I'm away from my hometown doesn't clean the mats, a lot of the students dont wear a t shirt or rash guard under the gi, and some don't even regularly wash their gi's.... It's all clicking now.

Going to stay off the mats until I can see what the dermatologist can do for me. Freezing them sounds like the best option for getting back asap. Thanks guys.

Are you still training?
Yes. As soon as I found out I was infected, I stopped training. Then I started talking to people in the gym and they were like "Yep, I have that too. It's fine."
No one seemed to care, and there was no point in staying away from training to get it cleared, while other people were still infected and training. After all, the disease is still going to be in the gym upon my return, and I would get infected again.

I'm probably moving to Norway next year, hope I don't end up at your gym, haha. :icon_lol:
But seriously, don't train with Molluscum Contagiosum. It's in the name - you'll give it to everyone you roll with as it's very contagious. Get them frozen off, take a few days off training and you're good to go.
See above. As someone else mentioned in this thread, there's little point in getting rid of it if other people still have it. It takes the body a while to build up immunity, so if I get them frozen off and come back to training, I'm just going to get infected again.

I told everyone in my gym, warned the instructors, but the general consensus was that it's not worth worrying about, because they're just tiny dots that aren't dangerous. Actually, my doctors also told me the same thing - not dangerous and (surprisingly) not very contagious at all. My doctor didn't even use gloves when she treated me. Of course, over a period of weeks and months, it will spread. After all, I was infected.

It's been 11 months since I first noticed them. I have 5-10 dots on my body.

11 months you have had this shit for and you still train? This is very very contagious your doctor for your doctor to say it isn't is rediculous. If everyone in your gym has it I am sure you can put two and two together and figure out it is contagious.

Stop training, get it treated and tell your instructor, if a bunch of people at your gym are knowingly rolling with this your gym is seriously messed up and I can only imagine the other skin diseases that are prevalent there.

I hear what you're saying, but I think I addressed all of these points already. I appreciate your concern and your advice. At this point, my body is most likely immune, so I will probably get the treatment now that I won't be infected again anyway. As for my gym, it's washed daily and the molluscum is the only skin disease I've heard of whilst training there. People are ignoring it because it's only a cosmetic thing. I'm not saying it makes sense, I'm just saying how it is.

I hope you guys warn anyone new that steps into your gym. And I am pretty sure you cannot become immune to it, if you could you wouldn't have them anymore.

Hm, my doctors told me I would be immune after a while, but a quick search on the web seems to contradict that information. Fuck. Oh well, all the more reason to get rid of them. Cheers.

So your doctor says they are not contagious and that you will become immune to it?

I think you need a new doctor

Iv hears that they do indeed disappear eventually but tht it can take months or even years to do so.

My gym had a small outbreak and we stopped rolling. I did the research and found a product called MolluscAway. It comes in a spray bottle for easy application. Healed the bumps within a week or two with no skin damage. We also used the spray on the mats and we've had no new breakouts since. You can try it here.

Good luck

Immunity does occur, but the problem is that with a bunch of people rolling together the virus mutuates (like any virus). Combined with your immune system already having a hard time recognising it as an invader (as it's on the skin) it takes a lot longer than a few months (or even years) to a) get rid of all the spots and b) develop widespread immunity.

This stuff is so common its ridiculous. I'm not sure individualising the problem or defining it in terms of guilt/shame of people who aren't club owners/coaches is the right approach. The only real way to deal with an outbreak is to shut down a club at the very early stages for at least 3-4 months, get everybody checked (incl. sexual partners of club members, AND their kids if any) and treated, then checked again. How many clubs would be willing to do that? How many high level (or even mid level) competitors or club owners would be willing to take that sort of time off from training for a non-injury related issue? Not many, if any?

The only product that has any scientificaly proven effectiveness (aside from burning off) is Lemon Myrtle Oil (10% in an olive oil base). It's likely that Molloscaway works due to that component, and buying lemon myrtle oil on its own is MUCH cheaper.

Just don't put it on your skin at concentrations higher than 25%!

oh fuck I think I got that shit, its bump on my wrist, figured it wasnt anything, will go to the doc tomorrow, and see what she says, I will literally kill my self if I have to be away for like a month or so, let alone a couple...

I have had it before, it SUCKS! I went to a doctor and she froze the larger ones off, but you have to wait until they are all gone before you can go back to training. Unless they are all gone, you are contagious. Took me about 5 weeks before I went back to training.

Man Iv been out since the start of april with injuries and now I catch this as soon as I get back training. Im getting out of shape, missed comps, people are starting to think im lazy, and im just generally bored every day. Rant over!

Just to weigh in e\here for anyone else that stumbles on this thread, im currently fighting it off on my arms. I got 5 frozen off on my right arm and 4 on my neck and now thy are on my left arm. Went back to the doctor and he gave me a strong cream which treats them and makes them not contagious. Please be aware that the only contagious part is the fluid in the "head" of the bump. If you scratch and open it it will spread on anything you touch..if you dont pick at and open them you are good, just get the cream/ or bumps frozen off, disinfect your gear, tell your coach and you will be ok!

Indian Lilac or Neem
In antiviral properties of Indian lilac, it makes a great herbal remedy for molluscum. Neem leaves are antibiotic and antiviral. They prevent rash and wart by spreading the source of infection and spreading them.

  • Take a 25-30 neem leaf and 1/4 cup of warm water in a blender.
  • Blend it until it converts into a thick paste.
  • Apply this paste directly to the affected area.
  • Leave it until it naturally dries out.
  • Finally, rinse it off with lukewarm water.
  • Repeat this molluscum contagiosum home remedy twice a day.

How long does it take for that voodoo remedy to work?
