Was watching Nat Geo and they're so fascinating. Want to chase a storm someday. Has anyone here experienced one and what was it like?

Not a tornado exactly but woke up one morning to find some wind had blown a gutter off my house

Had an F2 tear through my town when I was in middle school. We were about 200 yards away from its path which shook the vehicle we were in and bombarded us with large hail. Watching the wall of rain/hail approaching us is something I'll never forget.

Not a bad experience though. I love storms and it was amazing to see just how powerful the tornado was: buildings destroyed, trees ripped from the ground, a car on top of a gas station, lumber embedded in trees and fences, etc.

Apparently one touched down in the field alongside my house. It left the nearly 1/2 mile long center pivot irrigation system in a twisted pile about a thousand feet from my house. Then it went back up and touched down again about a mile away tearing up a building. It was about midnight so it was dark and I couldn't see anything.

no way, those things fling sharks every where

3. I was in middle school during 2 of them and we lined up in the hall way and put head between the knees and kisses our ass goodbye, lucky they only did damage to the roof and remove the letter off the school. 3rd one I was at work at TI and was in a server room and was ok but the building took some damage. None of them were above F2 maybe a F3 at TI cause it wrecked shit down the road.

I think strom chasers are some death wish mofos. They is no reason to run towards that shit. Nature be scary

Here in sw Florida I was in a small one, but it was an intense experience. I was home alone, it was a hot sunny summer day. I heard a weird noise and opened the door to find hail was falling, very odd. Then, of all places to go, I decided to take a crap, so while sitting on the toilet my ears started popping and the pictures on the hallway wall were shaking. I could feel a lot of pressure and was praying the roof wouldn't fly off. Then it quickly was over. No damage to me, but the neighbors had some siding ripped off, and garbage cans, lawn furniture, etc.. was blown way down the street. After that, a family member driving home from work told me that they saw a small funnel cloud touch down in the direction of our house. If that was a small tornado, I can only imagine how scary a big one is.

We have them in my area fairly often some barely do anything, others kill a bunch and tear up huge sections of town. Luckily we've only had a couple close calls but they were outside of town.

When I was living in red deer Alberta one passed right by town

Depending on what OP means by "been in"a tornado, I've certainly had some close calls. The neighbors two doors down had a tree taken down in the front yard by a little one in the late 90's. On a lighter note, we found a lawn umbrella like two blocks away after that too.

Hands down the scariest one I experienced was house sitting for my mom about 5 years ago. A tornado warning came and I was trying to shuffle all of her dogs and cats into the basement and then when I finally did shit started going off and I could see a tree fall right in front of me from the basement window.

i heard the sky gets black and they kind of sound like a train, this true?

One time I was inside of a twister and had to use my belt to tie myself into pipes that went very far down into the ground. I did this so I didn't blow away.

I also saved my ex wife's life by doing this. We got back together afterwards and I told my new girlfriend I wanted my ex back again.

What a wild time in my life that was.

I'm sure that depends on the size and how close you are to it. I mean, certain more mundane storm systems will turn the sky black. I'd imagine if you were extremely close to any good sized tornado that it would blot out the sun pretty well. I've definitely seen the eerie green someone else mentioned. The basement one it wasn't super dark any more than any other heavy rainstorm. I don't think the one that went through the neighbor's yard blotted out the sun that I can recall either.

I don't remember if I've ever heard the freight train sound.
