Anyone else think it's a tad early...

Invicta surely wouldn't be that expensive and if you are gonna have WMMA they might as well grab all the talent there is to grab.

Yeah I guess. If WMMA does not pan out for them I guess they can sell it to someone else or do away with it.

Gotta strike while the irons hot. It's the only big fight in WMMA, why wait for potential problems to arise? Set it up asap imo

I think the UFC could market Coenen v Rousey (former champ v current champ)
... or McMann v Rousey (Olympic medalist v Olympic medalist).

I'm inclined to agree with the OP. I would like to hear the behind the scenes discussion by the UFC matchmakers on this one as I'm sure they've weighted it out. Since most of the people posting on here are more than casual fans we probably appreciate women's mma more than the average spectator. They probably think that they need to start with names that people are most likely to know. Either that or they are afraid that if they build up to this fight it might not end up happening. (One of them loses, get's hurt, get's suspended etc.) I really don't know but I agree with the OP that it seems early if they are looking for a long term WMMA fan base.

I don't think lack of fights being the downfall of putting on a marque fight right off the bat, its how its going to be come off to the viewer.

My biggest issue is the loop sided talent that I think is going to hurt the Women's division.

You can find women fighters who are able and ready to fight, but doesn't mean there level of talent will provide an exciting and talent filled fight between the competitors.

If Cyborg comes out and destroy's Rousey, which many seem to think is going to happen, its not cyborgs looks that will really hurt the Womens division, its the fact that the talent stands no chance...its kinda embarrassing. Cybrog does fight like a man though...omg...Rousey is going to turtle up like a coward the moment she gets blasted in the face during the opening bell lol.

As long as Rousey isn't HEADLINING events I feel like building her up works out wonderfully. Throw her on a card as the co-main event to a PPV with a 6 fight main card, and have a big title fight headline, or have her headline a free Fox/FX card against Coenen/Carmouche/McMann to build her up before having the "superfight" of Rousey vs Cyborg.

I don't think anyone coming off a drug suspension should go immediately into a title fight. That includes Sonnen, Overeem and Cyborg.

It's going to be Sarah McMann vs Ronda Rousey (Olympian vs Olympian) and it'll make the main card on a big event. Rousey vs Cyborg will be the UFC's , 'ace up the sleeve' for when women's MMA (I mean the UFC) needs it most.

I tend to disagree, the Rousey train is being driven by casual fans, none of the hardcore fans that I know personally have any interest in WMMA in the UFC, I don't mind watching the occasional chick fight but thats because they're usually like a hockey fight, which is fun to watch but not something I would buy a PPV to see.

I hope they make this fight, Cyborg wreck's Rousey and then we get to watch Dana try to explain why the UFC has suddenly decided to not move forward with the division.

Nope, if they (the UFC and the fans) want to hype Rousey as the best then she should be fighting the best. Besides, she is the champ, she should only fight top competition.

Interesting to get your perspective on this. The people I know are the opposite (the hardcore fans like WMMA and casual fans think women have no business in a cage). Granted, it's such a small sample size that I could totally be off on my perception of what the big picture is. I'm curious to see how it all plays out. Thanks for weighing in.

No problem and your right my sample group is also small so not really any more valid then yours, what we need is a Sherdog poll and a Facebook poll run simultaneously, the Sherdog poll to gauge the more hardcore perspective and the Facebook would more accurately represent the casuals.

Cyborg said she'd need time to make 135lbs so until then why not start Rousey out against Coenen

i would love to see cyborg win and the womens division fold, but dana will protect rousey and the cyborg fight wont hppen anytime soon
