For some reason,I really enjoy watching Claustrophobic Mystery movies.

The mood, the character development, the panic.... IDK.

Anyway,here's my top5;

Buried (A guy trying to escape a locked coffin.)

The Exam (8 people taking an exam to get the big job, they have to find the answer.... And the question.)

The Cube (Bunch of people locked inside a massive cube, consisting of over a thousand cubic rooms. They need to get out, obviously.)

The Method (Very similar concept to The Exam, only difference is the computers give them instructions on how to eliminate a candidate, one by one.Last man standing gets the job)

Nothing (2 dudes trying to escape.... Nothing. There is a house, and everything else is just void.)

There are tons of more which I really enjoy watching(Fermat's Room,Phone Booth,Panic Room,127 Hours etc...) but these ones takes the cake.

What do you guys think about it ? Any recommendations, critique, comment ?

Haha, I was gonna say Fermat's Room.

Das Boot, y'know... submarine movies are good too. Das Boot in surround sound is pretty amazing.

Done well, yes.

Die Hard, The Thing and especially Alien are very good movies where a claustrophobic atmosphere plays a big role.

Die Hard 2 and Aliens as well, though slightly less claustrophobic.

The second half of Jaws had this feeling, despite being on the open ocean.

If a movie relies entirely on claustrophobia to achieve its effect, though, it's usually a script that needs a little more work.

As to TS' listed movies...

Buried and Cube are examples of what I said, where I feel the movie relies completely on claustrophobia to be effective and doesn't bring a lot more to the table.

I still enjoyed watching them, but they were no Alien. In Buried, the story and character weren't terribly compelling. The atmosphere of the box was everything. The same with Cube. It was an interesting concept movie with subpar acting and no real characters. Still enjoyed it overall though.

1982 movie? Looks like it got 8.2 at IMDb, so it must be good.

Mystery movies usually get around 5-6 just for the sheer amount of mindfuckery and sometimes simplicity.

Yep. If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and watch it tonight. It's a classic.

Yeah I watched both Die Hard movies but what I meant was more extreme Claustrophobia. :) With entire movie revolving around a specific location

"Locke" was also a good one, But it wasn't a mystery movie

In that case, my answer would be that the more a movie has to confine itself to one small place as a gimmick, *chances are* the less it has going for it in terms of story and characters. But of course, there's no reason a movie can't have all of them going for it.

And that doesn't mean the gimmick itself can't be entertaining enough to warrant a viewing.

Anyone watched "ExistenZ" from Cronenberg ?

Half-claustrophobic, but mixes human's perceptions of reality and mystery very well.

Oh also, one of my personal favorites and a flat out brilliant movie is Coherence. It's mostly set in a living room, but it never drags or gets boring and it's a helluva mind fuck. Can't recommend this one enough, to anybody who hasn't seen it.

Oh and if you're gonna watch it, do yourself a favor and DO NOT read the synopsis first and spoil it for yourself. Trust me on this. If you like puzzle movies and figuring out what's going on, watch it first, then read the synopsis. And trust me you WILL need to watch it at least 4 or 5 more times. Not kidding.

Frozen (not Disney) about some snowskiers get stuck on a broken ski lift and abandoned. I was entertained. Also the movie Devil, some strangers trapped in a broke down elevator with an evil presence among them. Both 2010 movies coincidentally.

Funny Games

...although if we're going to be perfectly honest here, I think plenty of writers could have came up with better versions of both Funny Games films' premise.

It's a great setup, with some dull imagination. Haneke needs to be more inventive.

I love the idea of Home Invasion movies done in creative ways, and let me tell you, fuck half of the versions that are seen today. Most of them involve sexual assault (which is enough of an issue in real life, to the point where it doesn't add ANYTHING of entertainment value or originality to invasion plots. I want to see elaborate re-stagings of Teletubbies episodes. I want Mr Rogers style setups with captive hostages playing minor guest roles. I want contests. I want games. Actual games, that are actually interesting. I want karaoke. I want sports. You have fucking hostages. Make them do something hilarious for once.

Fucking home invasion movies never have any of that creativity. They just jump on the first obvious criminal elements available. Murder, sexual assault, and menacing. Great. Not particularly original or entertaining, but okay. Do your ugly shit ,when you could be having fun with a premise.

There's a scene in this movie:

Where I believe it's the Muslim Guy try to crawl out of some catacombs thru a narrow shaft. He's wriggling up with no room to move his arms whatsoever, when he starts hearing these noises behind him..

Movie isn't all that hot, but that scene is VERY fucking Claustrophobic.

I don't think I understood the movie,but I still enjoyed it regardless.
So 2 kids kidnap a couple, toy with them, make them do weird stuff, and just murder them ? What was the magic of this movie?
