Anyone else feel bad for the guys like Woodburn?

My man is just a hard working lawn care specialist who is trying to follow his dream and make money as a pro athlete to provide for his family.

But then he gets the call to make weight on super short notice and then go in unprepared to a fight where he will be significantly overmatched physically and skill wise. He’s being set up to fail 100%.

And his thanks for doing it? 12k and a bunch of people making fun of him because he’s +1500 or whatever.

I appreciate you Val. You’re gonna get steamrolled, but so would most people in this situation. I have a lot of respect for you and hope one day you are a successful contender or own your own lawn care company.
I do think his "thanks" for doing it is a UFC contract and lets hope he does ok after this fight, imho he is trading his 0 for the "opportunity".

You feel bad for him? Hes getting a fight in the big show on ppv. He's made it. He's dreamed of this his whole life. He's been given a lottery ticket and I bet he's happy as hell to try and cash it. He doesn't give one shit what the odds are

Nope he is now in the UFC and even if he were to lose he will get another fight. But he will win tomorrow night I bet on him.

everyone felt bad for seth petruzelli too for being picked as a last minute replacement. its a crazy sport and stranger things have happened. im sure woodburn has rolled with jacare so he shouldnt be scared of grappling with bo if the fight ends up on the ground.

Petruzelli fought an aging street fighting slugger

Woodburn is fighting the best wrestler in the UFC in his physical prime. These aren’t remotely equal things.

Kris Moutinho got another fight after being a late replacement against O’Malley. Woodburn will too.

Yeah I expect this one to go down like Couture v Toney so it depends on whether or not the UFC gives him another fight. Haven't heard much about Donovan Beard lately so I have my doubts.

I mean he's undefeated and is doing the UFC a favor. I would expect they will give him another fight after this one win or lose and give him a more fitting match up.

Well he’s guaranteed to get another shot regardless of the result and knowing Bo’s wrestling credentials, a halfway decent showing will get him his own little hype train. In the highly unlikely event that he actually wins, I expect the UFC to throw him headfirst into the deep end as retribution for deflating their prized prospect. The latter scenario is also a win win in that it catapults him into a potential ranking and title contention.

He’s probably dead meat tomorrow but whatever.

Dudes getting 20 gs and a spot on the main card and honestly he doesn't even need to win for people to go crazy all he has to do is stuff a few takedowns in the first and he'll have fans. Then after this he most likely drops to 170 and gets a few W's

I don’t feel bad. It’s not like they’re threatening to kill his kid if he doesn’t fight.

they offered. He accepted. hell, he’s happy about it. Nothing to feel bad about.

Main Card Woodburn!

Paying his dues.

If he continues and becomes a loyal journeyman -- he could make it into the Hall of Fame.

If you look back at Kris Mautino, Patrick Cummins, Lando Vanatta etc they all kind of ran with it and were given more fights for their favor

It doesn't seem like any of them had the best career though

It's the opportunity of a lifetime. People know his name now, he has a shot to beat a top prospect, and he is guaranteed 2 UFC fights.

Being set up to fail is when you're put on purpose in a situation where succeeding is unlikely.
Think Nate vs Chimaev.

The dude that will fight Bo Nikal could generate a lot of hype and good will depending on his performance.

He has no much to lose and a ton to win.

Worse case scenario he’ll go back to the smaller leagues after a couple of losses as a much higher profile former UFC fighter, 30-40k richer, demanding higher purses and with a very notable achievement - making it to the biggest league on a PPV main card - to show his kids and grandkids.

Then there is the possibility that he wins the likely second fight and actually sticks around the UFC for a while, becoming a “real” UFC fighter with all the associated advantages compared to his prior fighting career.

Finally, as unlikely as it is, he could cause the mega upset against Bo and be an instant “star” at least for a little while.

So … well done Woodburn!
