I totally do that. Not usually with peanut butter, but just in case I need to use a knife again. Like if I chop celery, that knife doesn't seem "dirty" to me, so I'll set it like that on the sink because one of my kids will inevitably ask me to cut an apple or something for them shortly after.

but when i do use butter i put it back in the cupboard and put the used butterknife on top for next time.
