I'm an old, stiff blue belt coming off a 3 year break, just curious about the atmosphere and such. They seem to have gone through a few instructors. I like the idea of Alex Faia, trained under Roger. Any info would be appreciated. I hate cold visiting a school and getting the hard sell, only to find out I have to sign a 27 year contract for $637 a month and give up my first born.

I've trained at a few gyms in Plano. Cobra BJJ was my favorite of the 3 gyms (Eddie is a standup guy and very technical).

Where exactly are you located in the metroplex ? (what is the general area of your address ?).

Thanks, I visited cobra several years ago before their new location. I was impressed. I'm in the North Dallas area.

Cobra is a good choice (there only downfall is they don't have a huge selection of times/days for classes). There price is one of the lowest in the metroplex and Eddie is a great guy

Star Jiu Jitsu is a good option as well (it's closer to Far North Dallas then regular North Dallas). Yousef is a great coach and a big reason I like that gym is they have a huge wrestling program (which makes up for there lack of No-Gi). I also like the flexibility (early AM classes, day time classes, and nighttime classes). Atmosphere is great at that gym

Guy Mezgers gym is another good choice as well (probably the best overall gym in the metroplex, you pay one price and can train any art). You can show up and learn Muay Thai from MMA pionner Guy Mezger, you can show up to wrestling and learn from Olympic alternative David Bertolino or you can show up to Gi/No-Gi and learn/train from #2 ranked black belt Lucas Pinheiro (the options are endless).

Quite a few good options in the area (if you have any more questions just ask, I train at multiple North Dallas gyms every week due to connections and low drop in fees).

NDBJJ - Add that place to the list to check out. Newcastle is a sherdog poster and black belt there and is a top notch guy. I love him and JD Shelley up there.

Gracie Gym Plano has had 3 instructors in the last 3 years. The lady who runs it (not teaches but owns) apparently is BAT SHIT crazy and runs people off. The first was her husband, then ran of Pedro Mello and now they have the new guy. I know nothing about the new guy/how good/bad/great he is but that place isn't the model of consistency and doesn't have a ton of senior ranks.

I love Yousef. Star is a pretty good school. It's off Josey in Carrolton. Don't know how far you are from there. I live in grapevine it's to far from me.

Somehow I posted in the wrong thread. This forum is abominable on a phone

I also train at NDBJJ and teach a few classes throughout the week. We have at least 3 black belts on the mat at night and are always welcome to visitors. You won't get the hard sell at our gym at all!

And Nate is correct about Gracie Gym, except the gym has had 4 instructors in the past 3 years. There was also an older black belt that was flown in from Brazil that lasted about 6 months.

North Dallas has tons of options for BJJ. I live in Plano and there are at least 7 academies within a 20 minute drive from my house.

It's getting saturated. I remember in the early 00 it was only Machado and small handle full of gyms. It's crazy how many gyms there are today.

I FEEL LIKE WE HAVE TRAINED BEFORE

I know I asked this you before but I swear you have to be the lenny from my old gym in carrolton hahah guess not

but yeah don't get the comment about star jiujitsu lacking nogi, they have it tuesday thursday I believe

I don't think so. Lenny is my dogs name.(shhh, don't tell anyone)

Is Gracie Gym the Crolin Gracie lineage?

Yes, I believe so.

He's not the most well known of Gracies, but I've heard it said that in his younger day he was considered Rickson's equal if that counts for anything. No idea about the situation in Texas or their issues there, though.

No kidding man it has gotten out of hand!

You should check out Carlos Machado is Farmers Branch. Always multiple back belt on the mats and a lot of higher ranks. Carlos teaches every class now. it is a little pricey and has a older Gracie feel about Gis and patches but its great instruction, very good people and safe eviroment.

I trained there for short period of time several years ago. Carlos is super cool and has a crazy memory for names. But yeah, pretty pricey for the area.
