Thread title explains it all. Can be anything from Warhammer to some obscure rule set.

Fucked up my back soon after finishing my winter semester at university so I am kind of moping around doing a bunch of corrective exercises until I am well enough to stand for a good period of time in order to work. Have not really gotten involved in a table top game since I was a teen playing Warhammer but with my down time dove into working with some old models I had lying around. Had a bunch of old metal early war soviet infantry from Battlefront (Which I briefly tried getting into it when I was 13 but found it too dry and complex) that I have started to paint up and model for a interesting rule set I found called Chain of Command.

Bought a trio of ISU-152s that were also Battlefront (was kind of an impulse but I love the look of them and it was dirt cheap). Heres the results of that so far, make fun of my painting all you want, I got shaky ass hands and shit brushes but mostly poor artistic skills. Most of the pictures were too big for the server so I will have to take some new ones if you want better angles.

How does a game like that exist in a cold war climate?

Played 40k back around the time the first Chaos Codex came out. Tried to get back in recently, but I found that I couldn't sit still long enough to do fitting paint job. Space Wolves are my fav.

I played fantasy but dabbled in 40k I don't know how you can get back into it now man. GW has gone off the deep end with the shit they pull.

Checking in. I play 7th edition 40k but I've not been playing too much the last couple of months life has been getting in the way.

Yeah there's 100's of different games some based in reality some based on fantasy. The most popular game is Warhammer 40k which is a futuristic science fantasy themed game with a lore and history as rich as middle earth or any of the other great epics.

X-Wing is pretty popular atm as well, it's a Star Wars based game.

I could totally get into that....what is so expensive about it? Is it something where the more money you spend the better you are? Like you have as many soldiers as you can afford?

The small niche games tend to be a lot cheaper, but Games Workshop the company that makes Warhammer is reknowned for it's ludicrously high prices. The way a battle works is both players decide on a points limit for their armies, each individual unit or troop has a points value depending on its strength which is fairly easy to balance. The problem arises with "the power creep" essentially whatever model is the newest and shiniest is going to be the strongest so it's a perpetual race to buy and field the newest shit to stay competitive. As a business practice it seems to work & make them money, but it sucks for all the younger players where price is a big barrier to entry.

RF is on point with his comments about Warhammer. The company that sells it has a philosophy that it is a miniature selling company first and a game development company second. A lot of times you see it release models with powerful rules that come in a new update in order to entice people to buy them if they play competitively.

I have come to like historical gaming much more because power creep is less of a thing and due to tons of competing manufacturers you can shop around for great prices and what ever you need. For example I was toying with the idea of making a counter part Finnish army to play against the Soviets I am currently doing for a Winter War campaign. As for power creep it varies between rule sets but the current one I am looking to use does not use a point system which I feel is vulnerable to "mini maxing" were existentially people make army lists that make no sense from a practical stand point but are effective within the meta of the game.

Honestly the min/max culture around most tabletop games is what has pushed me more towards board games, with a fixed price point for entry and set rules I'm finding it a lot easier to get my casual friends involved. We've been playing a lot of Star Wars: Imperial Assault recently, it's like a mash up of D&D and a board game with a Star Wars theme. One person plays as the imperial (basically dungeon master) & everyone else plays as the rebels. It's great if you can get a few friends together I highly recommend it.

Take heart buddy, there has been a renaissance in board games and table top games were former gamers have become developers and have started to address these kinds of issues. A lot of mini war games have tried to stray from point systems where mini maxing is a problem and have heavily modified or abandoned them all together. For example in the ruleset I plan on using called Chain of Command, it still has points to a certain degree but army lists are literally figured out semi randomly at the start of a game with safeguards in place like attackers getting more resources to balance out the inherent advantage a defender has. I stopped playing warhammer because of life stuff but a lot of what drove me away was power gaming and all that shit. I have become much more optimistic and look forward to playing with my buddies. Part of the joy of table top is you can do literally what ever the fuck you want.

I played a campaign of IA with my girlfriend and I didn't enjoy it because I felt like the campaign easy snow balled for one side or the other which kept tension stale. She started to get frustrated too because at a certain point I was able to stun fuck the shit out of her heroes with various overlord cards and combos. I feel like this is mostly an issue with just 2 players so I could be wrong but that was my experience.
 
I played 40k when it was rogue trader!

Ended up with a 5000pt orc army but my favourite was chaos space marines. The world eaters, I had they're original colours visible in the weapon scarring on their armour.

Sometimes I'd just have them fall on their own chainswords outta excitement.

Now I play board games sometimes, don't have the time for proper shit!
