I just started training BJJ and I can't seem to find any stores that sell equipment in Manhattan, aside from a couple of lame ones that sell inferior products. I'm reluctant to purchase online due to sizing.
I found one in bkyn, but none around here. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Just buy one online and err on the larger size. You can always shrink it in the wash if need be.

What type of Gi are you looking for specifically? When we get new guys in our BJJ class we usually send them to Sensei Kim (Great Guy) at Honda Martial Arts Supplies on 39th St between 5th and 6th Ave to buy a basic Judo Gi. Sure, its not something flashy but its very inexpensive (~$40) and it does the job. Once they decide they wanna stick around after a year or so, they can invest in something nicer. All the guys in my school that bought those Judo Gis still have it in excellent condition after nearly a year of wear.

The one in Brooklyn I think you found is called Kinji San Martial Arts Supplies. Nice place, I live somewhat near there in Brooklyn.

Also, whats your height/weight/build if you dont mind me asking? Maybe I can offer some sizing suggestions if you had a particular brand of Gi in mind.

keiko raca has a store in long island city, not manhattan but prolly 40 mins away

I might be able to help you out. I have a few accounts with gi companies and I live in Queens and train in Manhattan. hit me up.

I live in Brooklyn (born in Queens) and train in Manhattan. May I ask which Gi companies you have accounts with? I'm in the market for a new BJJ Gi.

I live in Bklyn and just buy my stuff online. Easier and a better selection.

Kinjisan is in Brooklyin and they have all kinds of gis. You can check their site before you go. Doug was nice to deal with over the phone.
Keiko has the store in Long Island, which is really nice, because you can go and try out the gi.
I would go to the stores if it is your first purchase, because you can check out the details and most importantly the fit.

Yeah, the one in Brooklyn looked awesome. At my school they sell Atamas, but overpriced. I can get the gold online for the same price as the single weave at the school. It's just reading online I seem to be between sizes being 5'11" and about 160-165 or so. I don't think they will have a shrunken one for me to try on. I also have been training for a month and I love it, so I'd like to just get a serious gi and not be cheap! I can't believe there isn't a great Manhattan store!!!

its tough to make money just selling gis also with competing with the internet. You'd probably be an A2 in most Gi brands, some you'd be an A3.

Thanks for the input. I think I'm stressing too much on the type of gi anyway. The people on here have made me obsessed with getting the perfect one and I'm still learning the basics!

definitely call him before you go. it's frequently the case that he doesn't stock everything that's listed on his site. he'll get just about anything you want, but if you're gonna make the trip out there to try on different brands, just give him a hollar first to make sure he has the size and brands you want to try. he's pretty helpful.

Gotta get a gi that fits your body type. Many people would come in and would have a brand in mind that they want and when they try on 2-4 other models, they wind up buying something different. Kinji San Martial Arts Supplies - Karate uniforms, Sparring gear, Judo gi's, Boxing equipment, Jiu-jtsu uniforms, & Weapons - is the only store in the Tristate area that has 2-5 brands mostly in stock. Many students from the major academies in Manhattan and always suggests brands to check out.

By reading all these posts, their are so many brands that are favorable, just gotta try a few on and make a personal decision.

So I went to Kinji San and I guess I met you today, Doug! Thanks for the help. I was able to try on 5 or 6 gi's and picked up 2 Ronin A2's. Fit almost perfect. One white and one blue. Definitely worth trying them on first and having an expert opinion!

Glad I was able to service you. You tried on the Fuji, Gameness Pearl, Ronin Fighter, Manto gi, Ronin Insignia & Atama Mundial #5. All good quality uniforms in which have good reps. You just narrowed it down to what fit you the best.

Everybody has different opinions.

oh that sucks, Ronin makes a real shitty gi.

Can you please elaborate? Did or do you own one? I would like to hear what's so shitty.
I have one and its a good gi. Only thing that's bad and needs improvement is the collar.
The fit is very good for me, 6ft 163lbs, in A2.

So is this place in Long Island or Long Island city?

I know. That's quite a harsh comment with no reasoning behind it. I rolled in it a couple of times and I like it much better than the Atama I was using.

It's in Brooklyn near the Flatbush stop on the 2 train. I hate taking the subway there, but it was worth it to be able to try on 5 or 6 gi's in person.

lol I know Kenji's is in bklyn. I was talking about the other place earlier in the thread.
