Any recommendations for Western novels?

I've been on a massive reading kick lately and thought I'd see what the Western experience is like in novel form. But the only Western author I can name is Louis L'amour.

So yeah, simple request. Western novel recommendations?

The Walking Drum. Not a western, but still a frontier book, and one of the best, imo.

Umm... dude... Shane?

That said, I've read it and while it's an effortless sit it isn't great or anything. Like a more normal, unremarkable version of the film.

Interesting, didn't realize it was a novel. Any suggestions that ARE great or anything?

Check out Blood Meridian

Have you actually read all those?
Yep. I would recommend any of them in that genre. 40 Lashes Less One, The Law at Randado, & Cuba Libre are my personal faves but they are all good.

I've always wondered about what life was like in Southern South America was like in the wild west period. I wonder if the cattle rancher culture transcended national borders beyond the US/Mexico.

I think there were a lot of similarities but the big difference--and it is a BIG one--is that the American West was frontier country. And obviously there's a lot of stuff, socially and culturally, that's going to go along with that.

Why does the black dude on the Forty Lashes Less One cover look like he's wearing a polo from Abercrombie & Fitch?

I've read hombre and Cuba liner and enjoyed them. Can't go wrong with Elmore Leonard

Lonesome Dove is one of the finest novels I've ever read. Read it. McMurtry is a masterful story teller and this is his greatest work. It has everything you would hope for in an epic western.

I vaguely remember the mini-series from years ago. Maybe I'll check the book out.

Might actually be a nice topic to cover in English. As I understand it Argentina up to the early 1900's was showing a lot of potential to be a first world nation along side the US; and there must be a similar coming of age period that went along with it.
