Silva was getting his ass handed to him. Knocked out for half a second in both rounds 1 and 2. Was making Silva look like an old man up until the mouthguard incident. It's 90% Bisping's fault for taking his eyes off Silva as much as he did, especially when he saw Silva keep coming. But if he didn't do leave "fight mode" Silva would not have landed the knee that concussed Bisping. If this never happened, he would have been fresh in round 4 and 5.
THE FACT THAT BISPING WON ROUND 4 AFTER BEING CONCUSSED 1 MINUTE BEFOREHAND, is testament to the fact that Bisping was the one who deserved the win that night. Silva wasn't confident in counterpunching, just dodging. He's been like this since Weidman. Even the counterpunches he threw were misses. He had nothing for Bisping, he knew that.
Put it this way: If Silva instead knocked Bisping down in rounds 1 and 2, and was winning round 3, would he have let Bisping put his mouthguard in so he wouldn't get his teeth knocked out?
Silva knew he was behind and he knew that this was an opportunity he couldn't give up. Attacking someone looking away, because he doesn't have his mouthguard is the action of someone who knows that he won't win otherwise.
