Been running 5/3/1 for a while and just for the fuck of it was thinking of trying the baby brother version. Anyone know of any good phone apps to track progress with it? I saw they had an official one but that looked like they wanted a monthly $20 fee so fuck that.

No. Are you talking about juggernaut ai? Thats more than just a app to track progress.

This guy swears by the app. Apparently it's been revamped quite a bit. It used to be unbearable and even gained a reputation as such. I guess they fine-tuned it a little more.

ah yeah that’s what I was looking at

I’m not seeing on there how to set up the periodization. It’s one of those apps that you punch in a bunch of stuff and it spits out a program for you. I’m specifically eyeing this program https://liftvault.com/programs/strength/juggernaut-method-base-template-spreadsheet/

I mean I could always just print it out and lug it around but I’m just trying to make it more convenient on myself with an app

No app on your phone that has spreadsheets? That's how I've been using Sheiko. Just downloading the excel file and popping it open when I work out.

Why can't you just have the spreadsheet and write down what you're doing that day in notes or with a screengrab?

Because I’m lazy, old, and possibly have an extra chromosome when it comes to technology.

I’m just gonna punch my numbers in, print out the spreadsheet, take a pic of it, and throw some weights around.

Basically, that's what I do too.

I think I'd go crazy lifting such light weight / high reps. I assume you set your TM at ~90%? I imagine the program works best for someone who's already pretty strong.

im a beast brah

Actually I’ve just noticed that between BJJ/wrestling, being a firefighter, and being 37 it’s best for me to have some light days sometime. I feel like I get stronger overall when I do this, it kind of forces me to actively recover. That’s what I liked about 5/3/1.

For what it’s worth I run the ‘boring but big’ 5-3-1 variation where you follow the strength sets with 5x10 at 60%. Works great for me. Because the volume comes after the strength sets, it doesn’t take away from pushing them hard.

I definitely feel the impact of running 5x10 in squats after pushing the main sets to the limit. It’s like the best of both worlds, even if it’s boring AF.

When I did that I liked to alternate my assistant with my main lifts. For ex if I benched I would press 5x10. When I deadlift I would squat 5x10. Never liked doing high rep deadlifts though so half the time I’d do front, overheads squats, or hex bar deadlifts for my 5x10 on my squat days.

You read my mind. The one exercise I have not been getting good results from with this approach is the deadlift. It just doesn’t respond well to high volume training, I don’t feel the impact, plus it hurts my back more. So I’ve been pondering what to replace it with as a volume set, and thinking squats.

But for the squat day, I am loving the new x10 squat follow up. Really squats just work great no matter what. You can’t do enough of them.

I ran juggernaut for a couple of years, I'd just multiply the TM by the .% of what I needed to put on the bar for the set. Never found that getting in the way.
