I just ordered my first real set of balisongs after practicing with a couple trainers for the last few weeks, and I'm a little excited. I got one cheap POS and a Bear OPS Bear Song IV, which in my research is a good mid-tier balisong.

I so far can only do the horizontal and vertical flips, but I'm working on increasing my repertoire.

My friend used to do it. I got decent at a couple things and cut myself a few times. He sold his two cheap knives after a lot of use(the pins were kind of flimsy) and planned on getting a benchmade but it just never happened and he didn't pick it back up.

I do want to buy some again. It was fun to practice and play with.

Dude, I ordered them midday Monday, and they were delivered before lunch on Tuesday. Bladeplay.com doesn't fuck around.

Anyway, someone from work actually gave me some pretty good ideas about using them for self defense. I totally just got them because I wanted to upgrade my sword collection (I do/did Niten Ichi Ryu Kenjutsu too) to "any bladed weapon" collection. Luckily, I'm ambidextrous, so it doesn't matter which side or back pocket I stick it in. Whichever is convenient for whatever else I'm carrying with me.

How are you weak hand. I was terrible.
I'm considered right handed only because it's the hand I actually write with. Otherwise, I can do just about everything ambidextrously. I'm orthodox in Thai boxing, but can switch if I need to. I'm a lefty judoka who throws righty often. I drive one handed and switch off which hand I drive with. I basically trained myself to be this way for years. I make a conscious effort to use both/alternating hands when doing any skilled task.

My "weak" left side is roughly equal to my right when flipping. I don't even have to ricochet when doing horizontal flips anymore, on either side.

What are the advantages of balisongs besides the bad ass factor of flipping them around ?

They seem to me like the worst possible knife for any thinkable purpose.

I remember when the Balisongs came out in the 80s. Thought they were cool then and had 3 or 4.

Nowadays I think I'd just get this one:

You answered your own question....

But seriously, I just started this just because. Despite one of my earlier posts where I talk about a coworker giving me self defense tips with it, I have no real intention of actually carrying this shit around with me, nor do I consider myself Billy Badass and am looking for an excuse to pull it out at the bar or something. I honestly don't know or care about practical applications of my balisong.

I was an impressionable kid that watched Face/Off and had access to the internet - of course I've played with butterfly knives.
