Any Fighters Today Using Bas's Palm Strikes

Honestly i think its a great move from the guard and mount,to mix in w normal punches.

Bas was a savage animal, this move would not be for everyone but clearly they could work and are unpredictable, but in todays mma you couldnt rely soley on them. Good to mix them in. For gnp even better, smash the nose, mix w hooks and elbows.

I would watch sumo for some hard palm strikes.

F.e. Kotoyuki vs. Hidenumi at Kyushu Basho 2016. I believe day 14 or 13. He ko'd Hidenumi with one strike.

Looks kinda girlie sometimes :D but the power they generate is a lot. Hakuho ist maybe the hardest hitter.

No because you are allowed to wear gloves. With no gloves palm would be much smarter to gnp with.

There was a fight between Semmy Schilt and Gilbert Yvel in RINGS. In that match Schilt was without gloves and Yvel was with gloves. Seems that the rules were allowing the fighters to choose. Schilt took way more damage to the face and Yvel was throwing some flurries with his fists. Of course this is only one fight, but you can look at this fight and think again. I don't say that the punches are more effective (we are speaking with gloves), but it really seemed that it is somehow easier to throw big combos with fists instead of palms.

These days they have gloves and hands taped up so much that it's like a frigging club, so it doesn't make much sense to palm strike. If the UFC dropped gloves I guarantee most people would start palm striking.

For ground and pound I would agree. Standing not so much. Fist gives you an extra 2-5 inch reach (depending on the size of the fighters wrist) so it’s the difference between hitting or missing.

Bas once claimed he invented "bump fire" style knees to a grounded opponent where his knee doesn't have to move.

Anyone out right now. Bas always said its the most effect strike but other than the Diaz slap I cant think of anyone using Bas's palm strikes.

The most useful thing you can use palm strikes for is getting around an opponents high guard. A hooking palm strike hitting near the back of your oppenents head with the heel of your hand when your closed fist hook strikes cant reach it.

Bruce lee talks about palm strikes briefly in the tao of jeet kun do and purposes using them for this exact purpose.

Also, the modern martial artist talked about this in his podcast in context to whittaker vs romero 2. He said that the lower amount of padding on mma gloves compared to boxing gloves makes it a bit more like old school bare knuckle fighting than regular boxing. In the old days they used elbow blocks and those blocks would their opponents fists, so they would also use open palm strikes. It was speculated that a surge of fighters using elbo blocks could bring back the open palm strike.

I hope you found this useful.
