Nobody said he was a coward.
He made a cost benefit analysis and decided a mega payday in boxing made more sense than losing to Jones in embarrassing fashion, which would've effectively killed his hype and potential opportunities.
Even his coach said that he had a difficult decision to make, because he had to fight arguably the greatest fighter of all time and if he lost, his pay went down drastically.
It has nothing to do with fear. It's business, no different than Jones himself fighting for his worth and taking so long to finally sign.

Why in the fuck would Francis resign a deal to fight Jon jones that would lock him into an 8 fight deal essentially limiting him to the ufc for the rest of his career for money that isn’t guaranteed if he loses?
So him getting 30 million guaranteed for boxing to set himself up or resign with the ufc, only get paid on potential if he wins, for less money. Hmmmm
He offered to do a one fight deal, ufc said no. He offered to fight Jon in 2020, 2021 and 2022 and Jon “wasn’t ready”.

In the grand scheme, he would've lost a lot, had he lost to jones. Not only that, but he would be signed to a contract and his pay would have gone down substantially.
Which eric nicksick, his coach, also said.
It wasn't an 8 mil a fight contract.
If he beat Jones, they may have gave him something like that, but In the chance he lost, his pay would've dropped off a cliff.
So, yes. That is equated with hype being lost substantially.
Versus leaving MMA as the HW champ for boxing, It afforded infinitely more opportunity.
At the end of the day, It was a cost benefit analysis of what would benefit his career more, as opposed to fear. This is prize fighting.

i don't think fear is the best way to describe it. None of these guys are afraid to fight eachother.
It's more that this is prize fighting and fighters, especially at the level of Jon Jones / Ngannou will be fighting for their worth.
That's why It took until 2022 before Jones finally came to an agreement with the UFC.
And also why Ngannou was in discussions for over a year before finally leaving.
Jones is arguably the greatest fighter of all time, which both Ngannou and his coach knew very well. Everyone who understands the fight game knows this very well. It's only the fans who are wrapped up in their hatred of the man who deny it.
Ngannou even said that he felt Jones would do better at HW than he did LHW, because there is a huge gap in the technical skill level and well roundedness between the two divisions.
Ngannou wasn't afraid to fight him, but he was definitely concerned what would happen, if he did lose to Jones.
All of the opportunity he's built himself up to have would suddenly go up in smoke. He'd be making 1-2 mil a fight and locked down to a contract, where he wouldn't be able to do much more than that.
I think we can all say, he made the right decision.
But the bottom line is that it wasn't Jones who held up that fight when they truly had the ability to make it.

Every area Jones is great at, DC was a substantial match for him.
Francis had power.
Jones made a career of fighting guys who had that one hitter quitter power
there was always that next guy who could potentially put him out.
But, what these casuals / untrained warriors dont realize is that jones is one of the least cleanly hit fighters in the history of mma. His ability to control the distance with not only his legs, but also his insanely long arms is second to none.
You can't hit him. Even if you do, It's never clean. and you have to sacrifice everything in order to do so.
Jones is the floyd mayweather of mma, and this will only be realized when we go back in history and recognize just how little he's actually been hit clean.
The idea that he can be knocked out easily, is quite possibly one of the worst, most casual takes In the history of the sport

It comes down to setting yourself up forever.
Neither of them were afraid, and the money wasn’t right for either of them when it could be done.
Tim Sylvia was a dominant ufc champ, the guy is fixing roofs for a living now and can’t afford surgery. Legacy, ufc glory means absolutely fuck all.
Go get paid end of the day.
At 37 and 36 for jones and Francis their time is short as fuck. Leave the legacy shit to the younger guys.
The ufc model is you are not leaving their org as a winner. And if you do you’re going to be tied to them forever.
Look at Gsp, he tried to box de la Hoya 5 years post retirement and Dana stopped him legally from doing it.

Yes, as soon as it became clear Jones would be eligible and ready to fight at HW, Francis left. That much is known. Not sure why anyone would think Jones would fight Francis when he wasn't champ, that clearly doesn't make sense and would be beneath Jones' stature.
