Rumble came in to the fight with Gus as a 3-1 underdog. The commentators picked Gus and said that he'd be too much for Johnson. Instead Rumble made short work of him using excellent footwork, timing, counters and a variety of striking techniques.

Can we agree that there is more to Johnson than power and that he is a huge threat to Jon Jones?

People like to think of him as a brainless power puncher but yes he is much more than that.
With that said, I still see JBJ subbing him 4th or 5th round.

He's really good at stalking and cutting off the cage. It was obvious as soon as the fight started Gus was going to try and implement a lot of movement but Rumble did a great job at backing him into corners. That plus dynamite in his hands, great defensive wrestling and a solid chin make for a monster at LHW.

He's just a beast of a human being. And his cardio doesn't have the big question mark next to it like it did at WW. It's still not fantastic but he looked pretty good beating up Davis for 15 minutes.

Rumble falls off after an unsuccessful title challenge

The takes the center of the octagon like he owns it, and the way he cuts off the cage is such a huge attribute. He doesn't let his opponents get in rhythm or use movement to set up their offense, then he hammers them. Its really fun to watch, always has been.

He's always had the power, but his technique is great now, his kickboxing has really improved.

You look at him in the Vitor fight, then watch him against Phil Davis, it's a completely different fighter.

Same with Robbie Lawler (just mentioning him because they both have comeback stories). He was always a powerful striker, but he just put everything together

Did you watch the same fight? Rumble was getting lit up and had trouble landing anything. It wasn't until Alex corner yelled out push kick in the middle of the ring till Rumble countered.

It's at least confirmed that he can put on a high pace for 3 rounds. Not quite the same as a 5 round gas tank, but it's a big improvement over the 1 round gas tank that many would say he used to have.

I guess you guys were watching a different fight. I don't know what fight you were watching but he was clearly watch the Gus vs Rumble fight. There was no "getting lit up" happening at all

I don't think you were watching if you think Rumble was "getting lit up" at any point in that fight.

Right from the beginning he pressured Gus and forced him to fight with his back to the cage. Gustafsson couldn't fight like he did against Jones where he was able to move around freely, go in to attack, move back out and circle some more. It even looked like he panicked a little bit at the pressure Rumble put on him, and Gustafsson tried to be more aggressive than he usually is to match the pressure. They both landed some good leg kicks before the eye poke. And after the eye poke, we all know what happened.

He normally does well but that flying haymaker from the hip kinda makes me lulz when u say technique

Haha yeah you can definitely see the old rumble shine through when he has someone hurt. He's just a super aggressive dude

definitely more than just a power puncher. For some reason people labeled him as a heavy handed plodder which I thought was really unfair because he actually does have good footwork but it goes unnoticed because he's an infighter which is kind of rare at LHW .

It's okay. People will continue to ignore these facts and simply think he's just a power puncher and until he gives Jones hell.

Johnsons speed is good, his power is great and his killer instinct is fantastic. Boy knows how to finish a fight

Rumble has a lot more than just power. He developed very nice striking.

For example it looks like he is squaring up but in fact he is drawing you in to take a show and then he immediate switch stance and hit you with something. Just look at the finishing sequence against Gus. He even threw uppercuts to the side where Gus was trying to slip away, meaning his stance was corrected so he could reach him there.

Great sense of timing and skills. Also seems like he is not swinging wild as before. He waits until he hurts you and then goes berker. For example Davis fight, never hurt Davis so he never went beast mode and hence saved up his cardio.

It seems to me the way he is holding his hips a bit back that he is always ready to sprawl and he lowers his stance a bit just to make sure to dig those underhooks if someone shoots on him. And on top of all that throwing insane uppercuts to keep you from rushing in on him.

How he was cutting off Gus was amazing too. I really didn't saw that one coming from Rumble. Simply amazing. Can he do that for 3 or 5 rounds? Maybe not. Can anyone survive getting pushed around by Rumble for 3 rounds..or just 1 round is also a good question.

Rumble is fighting smart these days yet it looks violent and a bit wild. Still a lot of skills behind that.
