I think it depends on each case. No one likes bad publicity. If people become aware of mishaps you've done, you're likely not to repeat them if your reputation is at stake. Raising awareness may help in some cases. 'Raising awareness' in regards to police brutality for example has put cops under the spotlight. The press is all over them due to this and lots of bad cops have left the force. The consequences were important enough that most departments have changed the way they hire new officers.

This shouldn't be any different for gangs and other similar subcultures. Gang members have families too. Most don't want their relatives to see their mugshots and names in the local newspaper next to a headline that reads arrested for some (whatever). The family name still has some value left, unless you've changed your name to something like Nipsey Hussle lol

I mean Nipsey gets killed in front of the very store he opened to help the community he was a part of. What a horrible tragedy. But what did he expect living in the social media age where everybody wants to be seen and everyone knows what your thinking and where you are. Maybe some up jumped cutthroat saw him streaming live on IG and decided to lay him down just for kicks. The thing is when you're gang affiliated and have money, it's hard to be sure exactly where your enemies are coming from.
