The judge in the case determined that Moshfeghi Zadeh was inattentive and that his manner of driving was dangerous, but that his “momentary lapse” of attention did not constitute a “marked departure” from the standard of care required, and therefore was not a criminal offence.

Pretty much...guy runs red lights with ample time to see it. Smashes into SUV which collides into a man holding his toddler daughter. She dies and he is seriously injured. The driver found not guilty.

Uhhh!?

So you are allowed to run red lights and cause the death of a toddler and have no serious consequence. Oh wait, you can decaptitate then cannibalize people and be set free with a new identity here, so hell ya. You can be a serial killer and be released to start a new family, so ya.

These kind of decisions are so frequent here you become numb to it and just come to expect it.

How about accountability. When a judge releases a multiple time repeat offender who goes on to commit more crimes and especially murder, rape, and other serious crimes there should be some accountability.

The October 2019 Military World Games in Wuhan may have been an intentional super-spreader event.

When "targeted" is used to describe a crime, I usually think that this means one criminal shooting another criminal acquaintance, and this is reassuring to people who are not criminals.

But targeted is used differently in this article:
'While the release said “this is being treated as a targeted incident,” police sources explained to the Toronto Sun that this meant a home that was targeted for robbery purposes. It is believed the victim was not specifically targeted but the home was.'

So, if you run a successful business and live in a nice house then you should not be reassured.

Another mother in the area told the National Post that Senecal had sexually assaulted her young son in 2021. She said he was arrested, charged and after two years of court hearings was sentenced to 18 months in jail, but was released six months early, in early March.

These judges are sick and demented. They should be bunking with violent prison rapists.

I don’t understand this post at all. Under separation of powers judges have the power of the judiciary, meaning the power to interpret and apply the law, no more and no less. Not exactly sure how you view them as having “too much power” - what do you feel is the appropriate amount of power they should have?

As for a “standard they should all be held to” what does this mean? What standards? For what?

I can only speak for British judges; roughly 75 - 80% of them are senile old farts, so out of touch with reality they could run for US President if they'd been born in America.

The remainder...well, let's just say you really wouldn't want them babysitting your children...

Too much power is allowing criminals to commit crimes with no consequences because of their own personal politics. They're basically accessories to these crimes.

I feel as though the appropriate age to be a judge should be between 40-60. Same with politics and certain other areas which pertain to law. Anything younger than 40 is too inexperienced. Anything older than 60 is just too old. You have a 20 year career. Mandatory 2 months off every year to reduce burnout. If a woman...cant judge on menstrual cycle cause it may effect decision, especially when judging men. All judges should have to go through testing every 2 years to make sure they are in the right state of mind and if anything tragic or health related issues befall them, they should instantly be reassessed.

Much like surgeons, your life is literally in their hands. We need to be very strict with not only who is appointed but also keeping up with regular checks to make sure they are still capable to judge.
