This is the Anime and Manga thread, up to version 16. This is a place to give reviews, look for suggestions, and discuss whatever you may be watching/reading.

If you are new to these threads, then welcome. We've got a number of regular posters who have seen/read a lot, and people are more than willing to give suggestions. The one thing to keep in mind: there have been over 15,000 posts in these threads talking about hundreds of different works. It would be impossible to list everything in this OP, so I've kept it down to a list of works that are among the most often recommend. Please feel free to bring up anything you'd like, but remember, just because it isn't in the OP doesn't mean nobody else likes your favorites.

Popular Suggestions:
Anime
Akira
Baccano
Casshern Sins
Code Geass
Cowboy Bebop
Death Note
Evangelion
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (the first series is quite a bit different and was done before the manga was finished)
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo
Ghost in the Shell
Gintama
Golden Boy
Initial D
Last Exile
Legend of Galactic Heroes
Mobile Suit Gundam: 8th MS Team
Monster
Ninja Scroll (Movie is better than the TV series)
Outlaw Star
Planetes
Princess Mononoke (and most other Miyazaki works)
Samurai Champloo
Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal
Space Bros
Trigun
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (the original is a classic, but shows its age)

Manga
20th Century Boys
All Rounder Meguru
Beelzebub
Berserk
Break Blade
The Breaker
Crows/Worst
Dorohedoro
Gantz
GTO
Hajime no Ippo
Historie
Histories Strongest Disciple Kennichi
Holyland
Karate Shoukoushi Kohinata Minoru
The Lucifer and Biscuit Hammer
One Piece
Pluto
REAL
Rookies
Rurouni Kenshin
Slam Dunk
Tough
Until Death Do Us Part
Vagabond
Vinland Saga

Another couple images that list a lot of different series (warning, big pictures!)
A quick warning regarding some of these: there is some seriously adult and disturbing series on this list. I have read most of these and I would be careful of: Franken Fran, MPD Psycho, Freesia, Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service, and especially Tokyo Akazukin (so fucked up I could barely finish the first chapter).

Netflix/Hulu/YouTube/Crunchyroll
Many good shows are available through video services such as Netflix and Hulu. There is also Crunchyroll, which has streaming deals for many of the more popular shows. The following are links to some of the better series. If you have anything you think should be added, mention them or PM me, and I'll add them to the list (please include the URL).

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure should really be in the suggestions JBS.

Both manga and anime.

Rewatching Trigun on Netflix. Haven't seen it in years. Fuck it is an incredible series. I'm sad it is so short. I'm on episode 14 now.

16,000 posts about anime and manga. Bad ass.

It's on there?!

I swear I tried searching for it and nothing came up. Same with Baccano and a couple other series. Then others like Champloo and Basilisk show up if you search for them but not listed under the anime category.

Speaking of Netflix, almost done with Darker than Black. This show is awesome so far!

Going to check out trigun, hopefully its on netflix

I want to contribute a little, so here's my short review of Rurouni Kenshin:

My Short Review of the Live-Action RUROUNI KENSHIN Movie

Rurouni-Kenshin-2012-Dragonlord-1.jpg

Had a chance to watch Cloud Atlas the other day but I instead chose to see the live-action Rurouni Kenshin movie. I was a huge fan of the anime series during the late 90s. The movie was okay but they crammed it with too many storylines and popular scenes from the manga/anime that it disrupted the flow of the film. But one thing does stand out and that was the amazingly jaw-dropping action scenes. It was such a blast to see an awesome display of fight choreography in light of my recent revisit of The Dark Knight Rises where the lame fight scenes were even more glaring on the small screen.

Anyway, back to Rurouni Kenshin. The story is about a fictional assassin named Himura Kenshin, from the Bakumatsu who becomes a wanderer to protect the people of Japan. Along the way, he forms lifelong relationships between a local kendo instructor, an orphaned boy, and a cavalier ex-soldier. The cast played their parts well, capturing the look and essence of the beloved characters. But the actor who portrayed Saito was exceptionally terrific and had an incredible screen presence.

Overall, fans of the manga and anime series will no doubt enjoy this film adatation but it might not translate too well to non-fans. But one thing is for sure, the fight scenes are phenomenal and worth the price of admission alone.

Rating: 7/10

what is anime?

But is there an English dub available for it yet?

ya that's what i was talking about. I know that it's out(it came out in summer of last year) but I can't find it online. Also the film was available in english on PS3 back in september-ish. Then it came out on DVD at the end of October.

This is probably the 3rd or 4th time I've mentioned this , but this is an example of the Anime being better than the manga version, and yeah I love this show too

theres a very decent one out

here is a small list of my top anime shows.

DBZ - obviously
ninja scrolls - another obvious one.
samurai 7
basilisk
crying freeman
samurai deeper kyo
hajime no ippo
blade of the immortal
samurai champloo

and my favorite without a doubt that every fan of MMA should watch (especially the second season) is

GRAPPLER BAKI

if you havent seen this one please watch it , its awesome.

You watch it subbed or dubbed?

I think Trigun is one of the few that has a FANTASTIC dub

I never got the Baki the Grappler love. Way too overblown. I guess the more "realistic" martial arts manga are kind of a new thing.
