We’re hoping in the Time Machine and going back to 2008 boys.

Have you ever seen a ref stand a fight up where there is a guy in a dominant position actively working like Roy was here? Working the arm… mixing in knees… etc. I remember it being bad, but was just rewatching and couldn’t believe how bad it was.

Shout out to BJJ Roy! Crazy how he went from this to a one trick pony KO attempt artist. If he combined the two and lost some weight, guy could’ve been real special.

I know this is in EliteXC, but both guys are best known for their UFC stints and both were “prime” in the fight, so I believe it to be relevant.

Gonzaga vs Cro Cop 1 was bad too.

great call. I’ve seen that finish so many times I’d forgotten exactly what leads to it. Funny thing is it benefited Gonzaga. Terrible stand up for sure.

At least Gonzaga was in guard for a while though. Still a terrible stand up, but not as bad as what happened to Roy seeing as he had mostly been in side control since the TD and had just worked his way from half guard into side control when the fight was stood up.

EliteXC was horrifically rigged and went out of business as a result. Was rooting for Arlovski so was glad it got stood up but yeah this was top 3 worst stand-ups I have ever seen. Rumble Johnson vs Vitor in Brazil = easily #1 though.

Edit: Just rewatched this fight as a refresher and it was just as bad as I remembered. 2 takedowns stood up and a cage control separation against Rumble in less than 2 and a half minutes ffs... The UFC was PISSED at Rumble for missing weight by a ridiculous amount and the fight was in Vitor's home city so the fix was in hard that night. The absolute fastest stand-ups you will ever see in history

Gets a Kimura attempt and transitions to side control. Knees to the body. Side control for like 10 seconds. Yeah that was fucking awful. Way to shit on dominant position. I remember seeing that when it aired

Roy's BJJ was awesome in that fight. Maybe that was one of the moments he realized he needs to knock fools dead. You just can't trust these dumbass referees

I remember this like yesterday. One of the worst stand ups ever alongside Herb Dean standing up Gonzaga when he was pounding Crocop's face in with hellbows which led him getting sent to a shadow realm.

led to a ko so no complaints

that’s a terrible take. Roy was working AA on the ground and could’ve finished it when it was stood up instead.

In that way the ref determined the fight more than the fighters. That was an mma bout, not kickboxing.

Keep in mind, this was before Roy was the Roy we all know from his UFC KOs.

i know its a terrible take but id rather see a ko then a sub and was never a fan of seeing 2 big guys grapple

Mir versus Lesnar is to me just as bad as the other examples here. Also compounded by the fact that when Mir got Lesnar into a submission the ref forced Lesnar to tap a dozen times to finally release the hold.
Mir moving his head into that position and benefiting from it is just crazy.

Wasn't he good friends with whoever was reffing?

Better than refs letting a fighter clinch for 4 minutes doing nothing

If you really wanted to put your tinfoil hat on one could think that the fix was in for Cro Cop but it backfired big time Gonzaga was working there was zero reason for the separation but he certainly wasn't gonna complain after the result. I'll have to watch the Nelson one again i do remember it being famously bad but can't remember the exact sequence that led to the stand up/separation.
