EEZ THE GOAT PLAYBOI
Early in his career Anderson Silva made a name for himself as one of the best fighters at welterweight, in fact in 2001 Anderson defeated previously undefeated number 1 ranked welterweight Hayato Sakurai.
Anderson was once in talks to sign with the UFC to challenge Matt Hughes, ultimately he elected to sign with Pride FC where he would go on to pick up one of his other elite welterweight victories with his highlight reel KO of former UFC Welterweight Champion Carlos Newton
After winning the Cage Rage middleweight Championship against Lee Murray and picking up wins against veterans like Jorge Rivera and Jeremy Horn; Silva made his way to the UFC and put on one of the most one sided performances of all time in his debut, making quick work of Chris Leben in just 49 seconds
earning a title shot at Rich “Ace” Franklin in the process.
Silva dominated “Ace” with brutal knees from the Thai clinch to become UFC champion in just his second UFC fight.
Anderson would go on to have a historic UFC run, amassing a 16 fight win streak and 10 consecutive title defenses.
Silva’s 16 fight UFC win streak is still a record today. His title defense record has since been surpassed, and someday soon his 16 fight win streak will likely be surpassed as well, there was something special with Anderson’s streak however.
In a day and age where an interim title eez normal in just about every other division in the UFC, not once in the 7 year reign of Silva was an interim Championship needed.
Anderson was not only a defending champion he was an Active defending champion.
As UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva unified the Pride and UFC championships, consistently fought whoever the UFC threw at him, and outclassed great fighters like Dan Henderson, Vitor Belfort, and Rich Franklin to name a few and finished top challengers like Nate Marquardt, Yushin Okami, and Chael Sonnen.
In a day in age where champions do not want to move up, Anderson did exactly that, Silva moved up to 205 on 3 occasions as champion, most notable is his destruction of Forrest Griffin a man just one fight removed from being champion.
Silva never looked for the “money” fight, he never shied away from a challenge, and he left no doubt about who the pound for pound best fighter in the world was during his run.
Father Time alas is undefeated, time and time we have seen greats fall in this brutal sport, although even in his losses we still see flashes of the once great fighter he was.
Fans feel a certain way about Anderson now due to his two failed tests later in his career, when it’s all said and done you cannot deny the greatness that was, and you have to at the very least respect the unique skill set he carried as well as respect the Championship spirit he carried as well.
The Spider is hands down today still the greatest of all time in my book.
Sherdog Hespect for the Spider, hespect for the best. Thass eet.
