Anderson Silva - Judo black belt?

I got to green after two years but I did have years of collegiate and freestyle wrestling experience beforehand
That's interesting. I can imagine doing quite well in judo as a wrestler. The only thing I can see the judoka having a clear advantage on is grip strength and rotational strength. Tell me about it.

It's probably like some of them bjj blackbelts you can kinda get as part of the happy meals at McDojos these days.

Yeah that fucked me up at first, guys who were savvy with grips were hard to deal with. Then after the no leg attack rule change I had to focus more on my throwing technique. Haven't done it in years due to bad right knee (same reason can't do BJJ anymore) but wish I could get back into it.

Yeah I don't know too much about judo but Ive heard about these stupid rule changes. So what youre saying is up until a few years ago you could actually shoot the legs in judo competition? Did they ban that to prevent wrestlers from doing so well? So many wrestling techniques would seem to transfer to judo well. Especially freestyle.

It's a made up belt, just like his bjj black belt.

yep thats why

Didn't some Mongolian judoka with a wrestling background show up and take gold at the Olympics or worlds and that prompted the rule change? I seem to remember threads about that sometime around Beijing or London.

His judo black belt is worth as much as JDS' BJJ black belt.

Weren't those rule changes implemented because they thought it would increase the amount of throws which are considered to be more spectator friendly technique than takedowns from shooting? However I think it has made matches more boring because their techniques have been limited so it's also easier to defend not to mention it has damaged the sport of judo as those techniques are no longer focused on in training.

I'm pretty sure it was the same reason why newaza was limited back in the day because people thought grappling on the ground is boring. I swear some of those judo refs seem to have no idea what's going sometimes when a judoka gets choked out in competition.

It was changed to prevent stalling and winning by cheap single leg takedowns and to encourage throws. One thing I hated was they even banned the Kata Guruma (Firemans carry in wrestling) from competition. It was my go to move and the use of the gi always helped me get a good elbow tie grip to set up the throw.

Freestyle wrestling complemented it well because throws are encouraged for higher scores. The rules have changed a lot in freestyle wrestling also, I think a high scoring throw now counts as the match being over, similar to Judo

he musta went to a mcdojo

shame on you anderson!

Wrestlers tend to transition very well to Judo and hard to reverse on the ground from my experience.

My instructor thought I was some kind of prodigy at first and then found out I wrestled and said 'nevermind dis n***a wrestled before' lmao

Yeah I can definitely see the freestyle throws being very useful in judo. We very rarely see 5s but 4s are hit all the time. I believe if you take your opponent from feet to back its 4 and if you get his waist to the level of your shoulders or higher, its 5. As for the high scoring throws in wrestling ending a match, I believe, if you get 2 throws or takedowns for 3 points or more, in the same period, the match is over. Grand amplitude I think its called.
