Rewatch An older fight more people should watch - Chuck Liddell vs Guy Mezger at Pride 14

Remember Wand took hits from Hunt and somehow survived. On 4 days notice. That shit is crazy. What a wild man. One of my favorite Wand moments... was when he was hurt and they repositioned them to the middle of the ring, and Wanderlei looked at the ref and nodded he was OK as he scooted to the middle, but you know that he wasnt.

I've been going through my old Pride DVD's and this was a decent fight that I thought you guys might enjoy :

Guy Almost got him, but Chuck pushed through and was able to knock him out in the next round.

That was the time period when Mezger and Overreem were incredibly dedicated. Dedicated to finding a way to lose.

Chuck would have stylistically matched up great against Wanderlei though

I think Wanderlei would have lost against overeem
Eh, in a cage sure but in a ring I think Wand would have caused a lot more problems for Chuck. He was excellent at crowding guys into the corners or sides where a ring made it more difficult to circle off than in the octagon.

Chuck was tested in this fight & also against Reem. Rampage is the mountain he could never climb.

Hadn't watched a Pride fight in a while.

Everything about Prides presentation is better

The white canvas, the camera work and angles, the ring and the entrances.

Despit the dated video quality the quality of the presentation is still higher than UFC 20YRS LATER
It had great asthenic the white canvas has you commented on really brings out the proper clean sport and when there's was blood the brutality displayed on the canvas was cherry on top.

Was telling someone the other month that Chuck got absolutely lit up by Guy. Like he was basically 10-8 in a 10 minute round. Chuck basically won because he has a god like chin and Guy was too small to make the shots count. Chuck just flat lined him at the start of round 2 lol

It's a tragedy that PRIDE didn't just book Chuck vs Wand straight away. I have little doubt that PRIDE Wand would have murdered Chuck.

Mezger was so underrated…

He gave Liddell, Arona, Wanderlei Silva, and Sakuraba all they could handle…

It’s a shame his career was cut short.

Although Frank Shamrock was the most successful I always thought Guy was the most talented fighter out of the Lion's Den. I thought that he would beat Shamrock in a fight.

This is totally wrong.

He was not small at all. Those shots would have stopped other people. Chuck could simply take them anyway and thats all there is to it.

They might have felt stylistically,Page was a bigger threat to Chuck due to the wrestling, and also even if Wand and Chuck met in the finals, well, thats an amazing finals!

Wand only boxed with Liddell in their fight. If he had used kicks,knees,trips... his whole arsenal,he could have really done some shit.

I just think in a straight kickboxing fight he beats Chuck personally, he wasnt at the level of Mirko or Hunt but I think a prime Wanderlei was much more technical than he's given credit for and Chuck was always fairly hittable.

By the time they fought I think he was further off of his prime personally, two massive KO losses to Mirko and Hendo were as with Chuck the career ending KOs were yet to come vs Rashad and Shogun. Wand recovered a bit after that but really was never close to the mid 00's again.

He may hit hard, but If my memory doesn't betray me, he was 200 lbs soaking wet in that fight. So there was a noticeable weight disadvantage.

If a 200 lb person head kicks you, that should be enough.

I was rooting hard for mezger when this fight happened. His career could've gone a different direction if he wasn't on the losing end of questionable decisions and if he never had heart problems.

was a fan of him since his kickboxing days with the long pony tail. Similar thing with rockhold.

Did he have heart problems? I thought he retired because of a stroke.
