Americans: why is CM Punk famous?

I obviously know it's because of his pro wrestling, but why was he "chosen" by the writers/producers to become champ? I only know the guy from UFC, and with all respect i see someone who:

- Is not athletic
- Doesn't have an impressive body (at all)
- Is a pretty boring speaker
- Has little charisma

So what was it? Gotta be something right?

{<huh}

in wwe he was the top guy. he sold merch would sell promos like nobody else could.

Technically the average viewer of wrestling is around 40 years old.

are you serious ? is it an official stat?
OMG I understand better whats happening in usa now
I always thought it was for young teenagers

Meltzer reported the median age of a wrestling fan being 40 and most end up bringing their families with them to the show hence why it’s so packed at almost every Raw/Smackdown.

ok I tought it was the parents who were dragged by their kids like a at bieber concert or something, not the other way around

Because he soned John cena. His 2011 run was pretty epic. He brought the attitude era back there for a minute

Because a lot of southerner hill billies in america are closet cases that like to watch sweaty men whilst fantasizing about them running a train on them.

He wasn't boring on the mic. I mean, he's no Tom Hardy, but he was the best the WWE had in a long time.
Not that that's saying much, cause most of them are horrible, horrible actors.

But he genuinely could light an arena on fire by just opening his mouth. That's pretty rare.

Because millions of people used to pay to see him rassle.

He wasn’t a great pro wrestler he just had that charisma and I think wwe fans were done with the pg era so his timing in the spot light was what made him a draw. I say he wasn’t a good pro wrestler because even in the wwe ring his abilities were sub par and lacked a lot of technique and finesse he was carried by a lot better athletic performers. His demise came because he actually started buying into his best in the world schtick and eventually quit because like the late great HHH thought he didn’t have what it took. Bit the hand that fed him.

I think it's a few things.

He was a big deal on the independent wrestling scene, rather than being a product of WWE so he was already "cool" in the eyes of those hardcore, or wannabe anti-establishment kinda wrestling fans who were booing every generic thing WWE was putting out at the time.
He even carried his original ring name CM Punk with him, which is unusual and the reason why he can legally still use it today. His name isn't owned by WWE.

He was an exciting performer and quite charismatic with the microphone, so i would disagree with your last points there.

His WWE run also started in their revived ECW brand as I recall. ECW was the coolest shit ever in the eyes of old school wrestling fans ...so he got very popular there, before he got too popular and WWE moved him to their main show.

After that I didn't follow his career much. But from what I know he was "cool", girls liked him, and had those "stick it to the Man" attitude, and wasn't a cookie cutter.

Contrast to another WWE champ from the same era, jack swagger, a strong amateur wrestler and physical specimen, pushed to the moon by WWE very fast, he turned out to be a failure because people rejected him, he was cookie cutter and boring in the ring and when talking.
He said he was gonna fight in bellator under his real name Jake Hager and nobody gave a flying fook.

this is a good explanation, thanks.

what's funny is, what you said (especially about fans and Jack Swagger) is very similar to what Chael says about fans liking or disliking MMA fighters - specifically how frustrated DC was that fans liked Jones, and that it's completely out of his control how or why fans like Jones, because fans are going to like who they like.

and though it saddens me a little bit, the fact is that most MMA fans care about MMA fighters the same way and with the same criteria that WWE fans care about WWE performers.

i used to pretend it wasn't true. i used to believe people would migrate to this sport because of the sport itself. i was wrong.

but fuck it @Grijswaarde ; these fans who like MMA for different reasons got me MMA on Spike then Fox then ESPN (or in your case, on BT Sport maybe), so i benefited from their liking the sport for different reasons than i do. so all is well. even if it is more than a little sad to me, a combat sport fan.

Why it is that everyone from shitty european countries whos entire existence is due to American actions trash America so much? America isn't the only place that has useless celebrities; as a matter of fact, all celebrities are useless, it could be argued. Do you think every american - all at once - said, "All of us - the Americans - love CM Punk and want CM Punk to fight in the UFC and be made into a huge deal"?

Your existence won't mean shit without my european country. America is named after Amerigo Vespucci a guy from, guess what? Italy, a european country. Oh and you should thank another Italian guy, Cristoforo Colombo. Learn some history, you ignorant.

He was chosen by the fans. WWE tried to suppress him, and rightfully so. He is overrated

Japanese, why is Antonio Inoki famous?

I asked this question to a wrestling enthusiast not long ago, and this is what he told me:

a) He was good and entertaining in the ring, had good charisma and was someone they could root for
2) He was small-ish, and not a muscle bound freak, with talent as a wrestler
iii) He wasn't known as the protege of the company or a hand-picked guy that would win the belts just because
four) He was the anti-John Cena
He wasn't a talented wrestler. His other factors we're good tho
