Americans: why is CM Punk famous?

haha, I dont think you understand the concept of wrestling. In a big match every wrestling involved has a shit ton of motivation to 'give it all' even if they are losing .... that's how they get the fans dude. haha.

I said give everything to win.
Not give everything to lose.

It's a performance, and it's their job to entertain the fans. Nobody treats it otherwise.

Like any actor or TV star, most want to put on the best performance possible, to sell themselves and the product, ensure future bookings, improve their position, sell more merchandise, etc. In that way, it's competitive, like any job.

Non-wrestling fans get way too caught up in the wins-and-losses and "but it's not real!" aspect. People want to see a good performance, and a logical conclusion in the context of the situation or show helps, but wins and losses have taken somewhat of a backseat to entertainment value these days, and aren't quite so tied to prestige anymore.

Tom Cruise action films aren't real, either, but you can still be entertained and invested in the journey and outcome for a few hours. The same applies for wrestling. It's an action adventure, but without 2nd takes, in front of a live audience.

When pro wrestling was a regional thing, wwe focused on the northeast, with New York being their biggest supporters. For decades the state of New York catered to wwe while mma has only recently received their licenses to hold professional bouts there.

Traditionally, WWE territory is the northeast, namely NYC.

Sorry, thought for sure it was mostly hillbillies, turns out it's just regular retarded americans.

Well, it's actually quite popular in Japan, Europe, Australia, and Latin America as well.

Never ever seen anything like that in europe and I live in europe and have traveled through most european countries. Never have I seen wrestling in any capacity. Japan, I can give you that because even I have some sort of image of japanese wrestling in my mind. Australia? Popular? What is your definition of popular?

Latin America is just an even poorer version of america so that goes without saying.

Lol at all of this. I love when non-wrestling fans try to "educate" people on the state and scope of the pro wrestling business.

WWE makes more money internationally these days than they do in the US. They just got paid upwards of $450 million to run events in Saudi Arabia. They also ran an event at a 100,000 seat stadium in Australia last year, too. There's such an audience in the UK and Europe too that they now have their own UK/European brand (NXT UK) which has a weekly show, along with a UK-based talent development facility (WWE UK Performance Centre).

New Japan Pro Wrestling is the second-most popular pro wrestling company in the world right now. Their current world champion is from New Zealand, and they are running numerous shows in big US markets (New York at MSG, Dallas at AA Arena) this year.

There's plenty of other smaller and independent promotions and performers all around the world too.

Just because you haven't seen it (probably because you're not a fan and aren't looking for it), doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

I obviously know it's because of his pro wrestling, but why was he "chosen" by the writers/producers to become champ? I only know the guy from UFC, and with all respect i see someone who:

- Is not athletic
- Doesn't have an impressive body (at all)
- Is a pretty boring speaker
- Has little charisma

So what was it? Gotta be something right?

{<huh}
This is why

On this next one he goes off script and shits on anyone

I imagine that it is easy not to see something that you're not looking for. It's there, especially in Russia and Britain, who have their own organizations. Britain in particular has avid pro wrestling fans. Popularity has waned a bit in Australia, but is still popular enough that several current WWE pro wrestlers have come from Australia, and WWE will actually hold shows there from time to time. Same with Europe. They did a European tour less than a year ago, through Germany, Spain, Czech Republic, Hungary, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, France and the Netherlands. They went to Italy, Ireland, Spain, Germany and Portugal less than a year before that. Whether someone who isn't a fan notices or not, for WWE to actually go somewhere outside of the US there needs to be a certain degree of popularity. It's similar to the UFC. The UFC will go to places like Britain, Australia, and Brazil bc they will make money there, it is no different with WWE.

Now, there may be a misconception as to just how popular WWE is in the States. It isn't extremely popular. You could say that maybe the average American knows who John Cena is, but he has been in movies and on talk shows and has been doing those things for quite a while now. He gets name dropped in rap songs by popular artists. Most people aren't going to know anyone else on the roster, except maybe Ronda. It's similar to Conor and the UFC. Both UFC and WWE are popular enough to hold sold out shows repeatedly, basically anywhere they go, but they go to places they know they have a degree of popularity. Do either have the level of popularity here that the NFL or NBA has? Do they have the same popularity elsewhere in the world that soccer has? No, not even close. But both have a degree of popularity. I'd wager that WWE has more legitimate fans than the UFC though.

Latin America doesn't have much in common with the US or Canada, just so you know.

Really? Even overseas? Like dude up top was saying, I was under the impression that they were doing pretty well on those overseas tours, and that was why they keep going back.

Unfortunately just like pride stars he wasn’t able to adjust to the cage.

In the ring he’ll be unstoppable

They did about 62k
That's still quite a number for pro wrestling. Crazy that it is more than the UFC did with their Aussie stadium show. Like I said previously, I was under the impression that its popularity had dipped quite a bit in Australia.
