Am I the only one who thinks Mike Beltran is the best ref in the business right now?

Outside of the guy looking like a crazed Viking straight out of Norway (which is cool in itself), I haven't seen him make a really bad call yet.

I could, of course, have missed something, but there are a couple things I like about his style.

  • He REALLY balances the early/late stoppage game quite well. He clearly has a good sense of when a fighter has had too much.
  • When fighters fuck up with eyepokes or groin shots, he doesn't mince words with them. He never sugarcoats it like a few of these other guys.
  • He's super physical with pushing the aggressor off when he calls a TKO. I haven't seen him let a fighter take horribly unnecessary damage. Again, when it's over, it's OVER in his reffing. Him being bigger than damn near anyone who enters the cage really helps here.
  • He seems to have a real respect for fighters and the risks they take. Several times, I've seen him patiently explain to a TKO'd fighter what just happened if the fighter's gone unconscious. He's not a 'Just Bleed' referee.
I'm guessing the fact that he trains himself probably helps with all of the above.

Again, maybe I'm missing something, but he seems to be an A-OK dude.

He did a podcast recent on Effective Fitness were he goes into it all. It was a really good listen. He has worked as a cop for years and trained for just as long. Really interesting interview if you have an hour. better than herb Dean on Joe Rogan.

nope but should get the stache back
Its tucked in his shirt, i think hes definitely the best ref atm although he does make a mistake every now and then (Most recently not taking a point from a fighter who was constantly grabbing the cage)

what about herb dean?

He did this really weird thing a year ago in Bellator where he tried to get AJ and Cris Lencioni to shake hands after the fight. I'm not sure if he was instructed to do that or what but it just seemed weird, they're grown men, if they don't want to shake hands you're not their dad.

He also gave like 4 warnings without taking a point in Aleksa Camur vs. Nicolae Negumereanu a month ago. That was pretty fucking weak.

But, outside of isolated instances like those I think he's likely one of the best refs on any given night.

Yes. These 3 top 3

Beltran must have pissed off Dana. Or didn’t agree to protect prospects like Herb

I'd also like to add Frank Trigg to the list. He seems to do a decent job from what I've seen.
