Alien: Resurrection (1997)

The tone of this film was off. Not enough grim, claustrophobic terror. It was too Besson-y. Jaunty french irreverence is not what I want in an Alien film.

There were some cool ideas and scenes like the aliens eviscerating one of their number to escape, the underwater sequence, and Call was a cutie. But the way they brought Ripley back, the dynamic between her and the hybrid and the "Alien sex scene" left me cold.

Felt like more of a spinoff than a canon film in the series.

Yep I'd agree with this, I think it was a combination of Jeunet and Weadon being a really poor fit for a franchise that had previously taken itself so seriously, even stuff like Hudson in Aliens didn't undermine the tone.

It wasn't totally without its positives I spose, the crossbreed Ripley was reasonable fun as was JE Freeman and Brad Dourif's crazy scientists(plus as mentioned Kim Flowers rear end) but that just made it seem like more of a missed opportunity.

When people mention Weadon getting a shot at a more serious franchise this is always what I mention, he worked pretty well with Marvel but him doing say Star Wars or Terminator let alone something like Dune would not IMHO bring good results.

Whedon can do serious well in bursts (there are some pretty grim episodes of Buffy, Angel and Firefly) but I think he prefers levity and banter on the whole.

The Avengers films do have some serious moments as well, say the Black Widow flashbacks in Ultron but it just seems to be he's not really able to build an entire story in a grounded setting, he needs to fall back to the larger than life clichés.

Neither have I, but I know his reputation.

Just watch this classic clip from 2003's House of the Dead.

And keep in mind Uwe Boll considers himself to be on the same level as Cameron, Spielberg, and Kubrick.

It's funny you bring up House of the Dead. That was actually the first Uwe Boll movie I saw and I even saw it in the theater!

Personally, I've seen House of the Dead, BloodRayne and In the Name of the King. What's hilarious is that of those three, House of the Dead might be the best!

Of those three, probably. I thought In the Name of the King had its moments though.

I'm still surprised he was able to make a reasonably coherent and somewhat entertaining (if repugnant) film in Rampage. Broken clock theory I guess.

I haven't seen Rampage. Maybe I'll have to check that one out.

You would think that, as time goes on and he gains more experience, that his abilities would just have to improve. I haven't seen any of his most recent stuff though, so I have no idea if that's been the case.

What I don't understand is how he pulls the talent that he does (or at least that he was able to with some of his earlier films).

I mean, fucking Ben Kingsley was in BloodRayne, for God's sake!

To be fair Ben Kingsley has been in a lot of shit in the last 15 years, he still appears in major productions as well but I think he just likes cashing cheques cos he's been in some traaaaash.

I thought it was a great movie I'd give it an 8/10. I also agree it's better than covenant. Also the reason for showing you that she can dunk a basketball is so you'll know she's a bad ass now and not some normal women.

Um..... kinda.

Lol fucking Conan. I remember I turned that shit off as soon as I saw an 11 yr old killing grown men. I was done. At least the old Conan movies had some sort of realness to them excluding the magic shit of course.

I wonder if it's all about the money or if he also just enjoys working.

In any case, it's very strange to see an Oscar winner just not giving a fuck and apparently taking any role that's offered to him.

I guess I'd rather be entertained--in some capacity--than be bored. Alien: Resurrection at least managed to hold my attention by feeling creative and by doing unexpected things. Alien 3 just made me yawn.

I've never considered 3 boring, probably because to me it's the scariest of the bunch. I think that's largely because that was the first one I saw. I was 7 when it came out, and I first saw it shortly thereafter when my oldest brother rented it.

Scared the bejesus out of me.

lol. sherdog comes through again. loves movies rated horribly and shits on great movies that score highly. i for one loved resurrection as well.

Honestly the guy looks like he just parties hard. I'm sure that lifestyle requires him to do plenty of working.

That's fair. I actually didn't see ANY of them until I was an adult. All within the last 5 years I think.

Alien 3 was just dull for me. I know that Fincher ran into a ton of studio interference making the film. I wonder what we would've gotten if that had not been the case.
