Abandoning Prometheus is a panicked, low-brow solution to a problem that has so much potential to make things better.

Prometheus is like the prequel trilogy of Star Wars. It had a brilliant director of the legendary 70's rockstar class of auteurs who made it, but it wasn't particularly well executed, because it was so ambitious, it didn't really have time for all of its ideas, and so it confused everyone because it was more focused on the iceberg beneath the surface of the water than what was above it. But that's exactly why it could seed a future for the franchise that could prosper for decades. The strength was in the mythmaking. Its focus was creating an interesting universe, a sandbox to play in, not executing a one-off tightly wrought tale. Unfortunately, the sequel was such a mess it didn't even get to finish going wherever they intended to go with it.

And unlike Star Wars, it hasn't gotten this unexpected masterpiece that started out as a kids show running for hundreds of episodes that ultimately refined and realized the ideas that so many didn't grasp when the prequels released. That's what The Clone Wars gave us. It spelled out everything Lucas was telling us with the prequels. It peered below the water's surface.

This show could have been that. Now, I think, we all know it certainly won't be even if it wanted to be.
Abandoning prometheus/Covenant is like Halloween 2018 ignoring all but the first movie, or terminator Dark fate ignoring rise of the machines, Salvation and Genysis.

There is no reason to follow the storylines of the Curse of thorn to make Halloween 2018 when they can just start fresh. And that was the right

I finally finished it.

I enjoyed it and I'm interested to see where it goes from here.

I could probably pick it apart and compare it to the movies/timelines but it seemed easier to just enjoy it.

That's a fair point except that it analogizes Prometheus to the disastrous Terminator & Halloween sequels. I think the analogy to the Star Wars prequels is more appropriate for the reasons I highlighted.

Fair view

But prometheus was shit on by many of the folks who wanted another alien movie

Enough so that Ridley chose to rewrite covenant to make it an more alien movie than sci-fi.

Then folks shat on that so bad they cancelled the 3rd installment and went with a fan service friendly romulus.

There is nothing wrong with the choice to abandon a branch of movies viewed as inferior to go in a new direction fresh. Its done all the time

I thought it was ok but the inconsistency of the tone of the series put me off and the visibility of the Xenomorph took away the anxiety and mystique of the creature's presence. I really didn't like it being "tamed" or controlled and it was reduced to being like one of the Raptors from the newer Jurassic Park movies.

Eyeball should get it's own spinoff series though lol.

I watched the first episode, it's visually stunning. But lacks depth and substance imo.

The funny thing is that they made no gains either way. "Romulus" for all it's praise of a somewhat return to form, earned less at the BO than "Prometheus"(albeit on a smaller budget). Now it did make more than "Covenant", which was horrible marketed and a bit of a mess that felt like two different movies in one, so I guess it was a bit a course correction.

Ultimately, I don't think this franchise has as much legs as people like to think. Doesn't seem to matter what they do. The ceiling remains relatively low for a franchise that seems to have a baked in core audience that never really grows outside of that.

Romulus sucked lol.

It was praised by some because it was pure fan service, but it was relatively meh

Fan service = keeping the theme on point as opposed to making an unrecognisable spinoff with same name

My opinion is Romulus was my least favorite of the alien movies outside of AVP.

They tried to unsuccessfully recycle iconic lines with zero likeable characters and not many original ideas. It felt like it was written by chat gpt just to keep the IP

well they did that. not claiming its great. Aliens was about evil slasher alien monsters not some god palms creationislm story with the universe that will solve all problems. if you have the balls to present it as such at least have the balls to create an original title.

I enjoy the creationism themes in the alien universe and all the new aliens they added.

Can't wait for season 2

but why does it belong in a movie about monster Aliens?

It just feels like the franchise is completely fractured at this point. Some people want self-contained one-offs with minimal tie-ins and lore explainations, others want the Prometheus/Covenant storyline to continue, and some are still hoping for more AvP. With so many different expectations, anything they release is going to get torn apart by at least one group. And that’s not even counting the YouTube “anti-woke” rage-bait channels waiting to jump on it.

Make crap, don't be surprised if people point out it's crap

Or just assign them motivations based off your own political bias so you can continue to live in your safe space

The term rage-bait is also a misnomer. The only ones who get in a rage about said videos are the wokerati who can't handle others laughing at their extreme identity politics nonsense
