Just wanted to clear some things up about this legendary wrestlerer; I've heard in passing, both on and of this site that he was a master of sport in sambo, and that he had some amiture boxing experience. I hoped that someone here could confirm or deny this for me.

I do not know about his involvement with Sambo. But it is probably true. An Olympic level wrestler would easily have access to Sambo in Russia. In Russia, few people walk right on into Sambo. They normally come from a Judo/Wrestling background. Yes he boxed a bit in his teens but that was more for diversity. Or so I have been told.

My coach told me a story from Alexander Karelin's routine. He met Alexander Karelin when he trained overseas. But I'm not sure if he was at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. A few wrestlers got together and started talking. He used to pick up a huge, heavy fridge and carry it up 9 flights of staris to his apartment. Now I do mean a proper full size fridge. One for a typical family home, not a mini bar fridge.

Apparently, that was his strength training routine. Between that and live wrestling Karelin said he had no need to lift weights in a conventional sense. By that, I mean dumbells or barbells.

The guy was really flexible too. My coach Karelin had the flexibility of a dancer. He could stand in a doorway and put his foot into the upper corner. Impressive to watch.

I'm by no means an authority on Karelin but I've never heard of him being a master of Sambo.

I think alot of what Mr. Bosco's saying comes form the Sports Illustrated interview with Karelin from the early 90s as the fridge story and the felxibility story are both in that article. However the article states that he carried the fridge up the stairs because he had to get his fridge into his apartment not as a training routine.

I beleive his father was a pro boxer and as far as Sambo he was a black belt and held some titles but cant recall exactly.

I've heard he could clean and press 420 pounds

But seriously, to see why he is so legendary just look at a picture of him. Jesus christ the guy was huge.

the fridge story is that he took the fridge home himself and up his stairs to his apartment. it wasn't a routine, just a one time deal. a heavy one time deal, but still just a one time deal.

If you are a wrestler then you know who Alexander Karelin is. If you don't know who he is he is the greatest heavyweight wrestler ever to live. He was in the Olympics 4 seperate times and won Gold medals 3 times and then a silver. He was undefeated for 13 years and during a 10 year span not one wrestler ever scored a single point on him. He has always been my idol and he was actually one of the first guys to do an MMA match against some japanese dude and beat him up pretty good. I heard he might make a guest fighting appearing in the M-1.

Anyhow, I thought he was like 50 years old but he's only 40 or 41. I know he and Randy Couture have a huge amount of respect for each other. But anyhow, if he fights it would be really cool. I know a little Russian and went to his offical web site http://www.karelin.ru. He stated there he had just made a MySpace account and I just found it: http://www.myspace.com/alexanderkarelin.

So all you wrestlers out there make sure to stop by his MySpace page and say hi and tell him to fight in the UFC. That guy is just phenonimal. For the rest of you who don't know who he is, just stop by anyway and say hi. I'm telling you it would be an honor to have him fight or even visit the UFC in the United States.

I've Heard from other sources as well that he does hold the title of Master of sport, in Sambo.

That was a rumor. I heard 'I heard he had a bb in judo' a long while ago and have never seen a source on this or found it searching heavily on the net.

If Jesus wrestled, Alexander Karelin would have kicked his ass.

That's how good he is.

His loss to Rulon Gardner was only due to bizzaro rules. He was the true champion of the 2000 Olympics.
