News Alexander Gustafsson vs Ben Rothwell is confirmed on May 21

Gus is at HW now he should forever be known as Alexander Gutstuffin. imo (not sure who came up with that probably a sherdogger but it wasn't me) lol

I don't really like these fights. Both fighters have looked terrible in their last fights and should hang it up.

Rothwell just got obliterated by a Brazilian guy so who knows if he can even still perform

Hmmm….Both are on the decline. I’d rather see Gus at 205 though. If he’s ever gonna touch gold the time is now and he does not have much more.

Big Ben will catch Gus before the final horn I feel.

This is such an odd matchup. I hope Gus wins.. if he loses to Rothwell he should probably hang it up. Not that rothwell sucks or anything but still.

Gus needs to fight at 205 - he was just at the wrong time with Jones.

Gus's chin can't hold up to a big true HW like Ben. And Ben will have no respect for the power of Gus.

Ben wins by TKO at some point in the 2nd.

Interestingly he beat both of the past two lhw champions. Yeah, I agree. He should fight at lhw.

Both have looked terrible recently and are an example of how terrible and desperate today's HW division is.

Gus should have stayed at LHW, that division is wide open

He's unfortunately regressed. If is TDD has worsened like it seemed it did VS Werdum, current Glover will avoid the standup, take him down ASAP and pound on him until he quits. He likely beats Jan again, granted his hands are still intact. Sans Corey Anderson (who's in Bellator and still could likely lose), Gus beats almost everyone else in the top 10 mid/high difficulty, with Jiri, Rakic, and Ankalaev being his toughest outs, and with a restrengthened mental mindset he likely beats Anthony Smith in the rematch probably. It's outright laziness the reason he wont drop back down, doesn't feel like losing weight or committing to a weight cut, and like a previous poster said he likely (unwisely) wants another shot at Jon Jones based on limited successes in the previous matchups.

I hope Gus does well. I use to be a Jon fan, but I always respected Gus' hustle at LHW. His last showing against Jon wasn't great and it looked like he gave up against Lionheart. He also got worked by Werdum at HW. Man it's a shame because in his prime, barring his devastating loss to Johnson, the man was a 'g. He had legendary battles with Jon and DC, grapple fucked Jan, and embarrassed Glover. He fell off so quickly. He also took too much time off... That may have hurt him more than anything. It seems he doesn't take losses very well or something.

Yeah, I love the guy, but Rumble took his soul, and in the Jones rematch he took whats left. He never, ever wants to get blasted like that ever again. There's gotta be nothing more heartbreaking than almost being champ TWICE and hanging with the best there is at LHW, to being sent to the shadow realm by Johnson and getting your will broken and choked out by Anthony Smith. It sucks, but mentally he needs a complete re-breather and I dont think going up against power heavy HWs with well above average grappling chops just to get a paycheck and eventually cut is the way to go. Still, I wish him the best, I suggest he see a sports psychologist, take another year off and train like hell, and return to LHW against a fringe to 10 guy.

It's a shame because gus is only 35 and that's really not that old for a heavyweight. If he got his mind back in the game and really focused himself, he could potentially go on a nice run. I just don't think his mind is in it anymore.
Unfortunately that's true, I think losing out to Jones and DC after his giving his best performance took his enthusiasm for the sport
Add to that the knockout from Rumble
Its like fight iq went from 100 to 50.
He looks elite when he is ON but thats not most of the times
Writing all of that made me sad, he is still my favourite LHW

Such a weird fight to make, Gus is going to have his soul escape his body

He also had very close 5-round wars vs. Jones and Cormier back in the day. In his prime, he was probably the best LHW to never win the belt. He was never the same after Rumble flattened him, though. That started a downhill slide.
