It's a 4 minute clip of the podcast, so you guys can watch without fear. It's already placed exactly in the only subject there, his first fight and opinion on JJ.

It was after the second fight vs DC... Right when JJ was already in the talks to fight Gustaffson the second time.

He said it was a little rough because everyone was "you winning, you winning, you got 3 rounds, but... I don't know, I feel like I didn't pass the goal line, after all". Then Joe Rogan asked if when they were announcing the results if Gustafsson though he had won, he said... "I didn't know, I wasn't sure if I had won or not. I mean I remembered almost the whole fight, but... Jon Jones is such a beast, man. His toughness and all... He is a beast and to me, a win over Jon Jones is bigger than getting the belt. It doesn't even matter the belt, fighting Jon Jones and winning is... "

Spoken like a true warrior, I hated seeing him beat shogun , but came to like his style and personality. When he was on he seemed like a laser, but his self doubt I believe was his demise. Then again I don’t know what happens behind the scenes , even slight injuries add up. When you get to a certain level, luck definitely becomes a part of the equation.

It was back and forth to me. One of those fights that I had no clue so was just going to wait to see what the judges say. Sometimes fights are close and it's okay to not be sure, especially considering Gus had a 5 rounds war and I'm just chilling on my couch and have no idea.

  1. I'm a Jones hater, but he clearly won that fight. When the decision was read, I had zero doubt...and neither did all 3 judges and 13 out of 14 media members. The controversy was an entirely fan-driven narrative.
  2. Rogan thinking that Jones "didn't take anything" is absurd, as are many things Rogan says.

Yeah, it was to me, the best fight I've seen. Like, there were many huge fights too, like Glover vs Jiri... But Glover vs Jiri seemed to have to ups and downs, like... Glover would bet Jiri on the ground a lot, Jiri would stand up, beat Glover, Glover would take him down... This one seemed more unpredictable, with a clear strong start from Gus, then a real tough with high level display of skills and athleticism in round 3... Then a round 4 which seemed to be JJ's demise and then... The huge spinning elbow that turned the tides, followed by many elbows on the fence and the flying knee... And the 5th round, both were wasted, tho Gus was at some point when JJ managed to land two hesd kicks, one which Gus didn't even block... Gus was trying to make it seem like he was ok, but it's almost like he was pulling his last will power to not fall in the ground. Then at one moment he used JJ's move (in the 5th round) and hit JJ with a spinning elbow, too... JJ took him down in the last round, but Gus got up, and both took like 5 seconds off just leaning one on the other due to how tired they were.... Even when asked, JJ says that if he were to show a fight to his kids later on, or grandkids wtv, the Gustafsson 1 would be the one he'd be the proudest, due to how good it was.

When JJ took Gus on that same year, Gustafsson was also in his best due to his desire to face JJ again, like, I think his goal of defeating JJ just made him the best out there outside JJ and DC... And I think Gus and DC when Gus was on his heydays were equally good and JJ one step above. Gus had came up of a huge KO win vs Glover and a total dominant unanimous decision vs Jan Blackowski... Then he lost to JJ in the third round with g&p... Then, it seems he lost a little of that thing, knowing his saga with JJ was over. The hunger, motivation, it all matters a lot.

Do you think that Gus back then was better than the Ankalaev from now?

he should have won that fight, but got worked in the rematch, so it is what it is.

At lest Jones eventually gave him one… unlike GSP who straight up quit after Hendricks slapped him around

In the rematch, they had to move the event from Vegas to Los Angeles because Jones “picograms” couldn’t get cleared for Nevada’s anti-doping requirements. He needed the PEDs to beat Gus in their second bout. Jones is a cheat and will always be a cheat. He lost the first fight as clear as losing to Reyes.

He’s a cheat and a duck, nothing new bro.

Jon Jones has always had special privileges in UFC judging.

When that fight aired, I thought Gus got robbed.
When I re-watched it, I realized it was basically a coinflip.

At that point of Jones' career, if you didn't knock Jones out, you weren't getting the belt. It was that simple.

If you want to see a truly egregious example of this, watch Jones/Reyes.

That should have been the end of Jones' championship run. Absolute highway robbery.

Yesterday's news. They're both bums now.

damn fam yuh str8 sine him pitty on di runny kine fi real good work king 🔥

I'll always remember this photo of the post fight, real powerful mind on Jones to win that last round after the beating he'd taken.

Jones said he couldn't even wipe his own ass after the fight and his coach had to help.

"He got carted... I was waiting at the press conference, Jon and I shared a locker room... and he came right from the fight, on a stretcher, they brought him in the back where the doctors are, cause I was getting stitches on my head and Jon was in there. I got to admit man, it was scary to see a human being like that. His face was swollen shut. He's bleeding out of his eyes, ears, mouth. He was throwing up... He was just so beat up. His body was shaking. I just looked at him and I was like: 'dang, man'"

For me it was clear 48-47 for Jones not as clear as I had 48-47 for Reyes, but still

Inspired by this thread I just rewatched the first fight after a long long time. It was downright amazing, dunno if it's the best ever for me - but it surely is in the running. Mindbendingly awesome show of skills, grit and heart from both. Gus at the top his game was quite something indeed, and of course Jones is Jones.

It's always hard to say for those kind of hypotheticals. The sad truth for alot of people is if there was a time machine most likely the old guys lose to the new guys, there is just more knowledge for mma fights now every 10 years. Anklaev is pretty boring most times, but he's pretty defensively aware, maybe more of a technical striker than Gus. But idk, Gus might be able to just bring sheer activity to win a decision. It would be a good fight, but right now think Ankalaev would win.

No amount of PEDs makes you go from life and death with an opponent to assault & battery with intent to maim.
