I just want to start off by saying im not the biggest fan of interim titles and only believe they should be used in very rare cases when it actually makes sense which brought me to start this thread. Would Aldo vs Edgar be for an interim title if it wasnt on UFC 200? I almost feel like a big part of the reason they made it for the title was only because fans are expecting something big at UFC 200 and now they can pass it off as having another title fight added on the card (I say another title fight because im assuming they will add a legit title fight as well at some point). So my question is simply would the Aldo vs Edgar match be for an interim title if it was on UFC 199 or say 201 or would they have made it for a interim title fight regardless because of the McGregor situation?

It's to appease them for not getting title shots. They were both told after 194 weekend that they'd be getting shots.

And it's because Conor's going 2 fights without defending his title, and his future in the division is uncertain.

They're the 2 main reasons.

tl;dr

Shane Carwin.

I'm with, sigh, Helwani on this one. Why would Aldo or Edgar sign to this fight especially on this card?

It makes them look weak. Put a man's gotta eat it I suppose.

Because McGregor's not fighting at 145 again.

It only makes them look weak or bad to a weird segment of fans. Fans in the know know of Aldo's and Edgar's skills and merits, regardless of what fight they have scheduled or their card position. Fans not in the know likely don't know who they are anyway, and don't know the meaning of the titles and card positions.

Anyway, Aldo got knocked out in 13 seconds, has been generally inactive, has drug testing controversy, has spoken badly of the UFC in the past, yet he's still in a title fight on the biggest PPV of all time, despite coming off an embarrassing loss.

Frankie Edgar has the opportunity to avenge his sole Featherweight loss, on the biggest PPV of all time, against the division's GOAT, for a title. If he beats Aldo, he'll get PPV points on an eventual showdown with Conor. He could be facing him at MSG on a PPV that does even better than 200 later this year, possibly also featuring Rousey's return. If he loses to Aldo, then he likely doesn't deserve to be champion anyway, and can't have much to complain about.

It's for a fake belt and the fight sucks
