Television AHSOKA Live-ActionSeries (Premieres Aug. 23, 2023)

Good episode, best of the season even, but not a good finale. Had more of a late mid-season feel.
Its been a pretty inept venture so far so hard to see how they fix the story in the wake of Ray Stevens passing.
Shame, so many great characters wasted.

More setting the stage, but solid episode.

I feel like this had a lot of Rebels fan service but that's lost on me since I only saw a few episodes of Rebels.

For those who've read the EU stuff (I haven't), are you satisfied with live action Thrawn? I mean he comes off menacing and evil genius like, but Lars Mikkelsen looks like skinny fat Sheldon Cooper trying out for Blue Man group. I'm also struggling to accept how this dude is upheld as such a badass in a universe of overpowered force users. In the Rebels finale, we saw Ezra Bridger son him AND his armed guards single-handedly with weak ass force push. When he's standing in front of them, Baylan or Shin could have force choked him, made him punch himself in the face or whatever. I get he's a tactical and strategic genius but his muscle is just standard Imperial cruisers, tie fighters and stormtroopers?

Not the finale, still two episodes to go.

I enjoyed that episode, particularly the first 1/2-3/4, the part with her looking for Ezra dragged a bit. The world building and atmosphere was the best part for me. It felt "epic", almost Lord of the Rings-esque.

I didn't get any fan service vibes in this episode. Other than
Ezra, Thrawn, and Sabine existing
there weren't any throwbacks.

Lars voice wise and in mannerisms seems like perfect Thrawn to me but he's not stout enough - they should've made him get in shape for the role or had someone else play Thrawn and have him do the voice. Thrawn would never let himself go, that actually bothered me quite a bit. In the EU books Thrawn was very intelligent and aside from understanding warfare he studied the art of culture of his adversaries and used that knowledge to predict their actions in battle. Great strategist HOWEVER, unpopular opinion - Thrawn, yes, EU Thrawn from the original Thrawn trilogy, is overrated. He did smart stuff and used Rebel tactics in the books but his genius is way overrated and I thought the New Republic should've and would've predicted that their attempt at deception would've been anticipated. In the books there weren't any force users except Luke and a Jedi clone named C'baoth. In the book he had procured lizards that were immune to the force and projected those "force dead spots" around them (my words). I actually found them to be really lame and lazy writing. For as good as of a read as the original Thrawn trilogy is, it's overrated and the writing isn't as strong as people would lead you to believe.

It seems this version of Thrawn will probably have the Night Sisters to protect him from force users, he actually has more of an uphill battle in this universe than in the books.

Makes sense. I thought the night sister witches looked really cool for live action, spitting image of Talzin from Clone Wars. It reeks of Jedi. It puts the lotion on it's skin or it gets the hose again. LOL.
So those rat wolf things that Sabine (and Baylan and Shin) were riding weren't in Rebels? This was a "setting the stage" episode and while I enjoyed it, Thrawn's grand entrance in his command ship, stormtroopers with armor held together with duct tape, the way he marched up to them, and the scene where Sabine chats up Ezra felt like a homage to me. But maybe it was just standard SW grandiosity.

Makes sense. Yeah from what I've heard of Thrawn, figured he should at least look physically... dignified. His call sign isn't Piggy. I thought the night sister witches looked really cool for live action, spitting image of Talzin from Clone Wars. It reeks of Jedi. It puts the lotion on its skin or it gets the hose again. LOL.

There were Loth-wolves in Rebels so I guess kinda sorta that could be a throwback but these looked like just another riding animal in SW to me. Thrawn just had normal stormtroopers in Rebels and the EU Thrawn trilogy, the entrance I didn't notice, just seemed like a typical entrance for an important Imperial to me but I don't remember his entrance in Rebels.

Yeah Thrawn in Rebels and EU was scrappy not porky lol. He's the opposite of the kind of character that would let himself go, that's actually a really bad error in the show, especially coming from the guy who made Rebels (where Thrawn throws down).

The night sisters looked great. I'm guessing they'll protect Thrawn from force users and Thrawn probably has other tricks up his sleave from this galaxy.

A little foreshadowing. Baylon was referred to as a mercenary, not beholden to or specifically in league with the Empire at his core. His discussions with Shin lead me to believe that she was taught, at least in part, of the Jedi way. I wonder if Shin even knows what she is, and if she has resentment for that. She appears to miss what she does not know, an orphan with direction only given to her my her master. Baylon seemed awfully romantic this episode, and Ahsoka seemed to be averse to killing as a means to an end in the WBW. Interesting lead up.

Totally agree about the mid-late season feel

That and the Thrawn voice wasn't quite right imo

I haven't read the EU or canon Thrawn books but I expected Thrawn not to look good because Disney is not good with alien costumes(he looks better on the book cover but that's just 1 photo shoot thats not really the same thing). They had to go with Lars Mikkelsen because his voice from Rebels was very distinctive. I don't think it was possible to cast someone else for that reason. We've had shots of Thrawn from this episode for quite awhile so I think people have had time to get used to his look.

And yes you're correct about Thrawn in a 1v1 Thrawn wouldn't have a chance against a force wielder, Mando or anyone like that. He has no magical powers. Not to say hes unfit or anything, in Rebels it is established he does train martial arts and is capable in hand to hand combat. The one fight he gets into and wins is against an ex imperial who he remarks "has a predictable fighting style from the academy"(paraphrasing) there's nothing special there. His comp would probably be Napoleon IRL.

Lol at the Blue Mans group Sheldon Cooper lol.

Nice! I thought this was it, I have a ...New Hope <Moves>

Saw a video that said something that's meow obvious to me - the stormtroopers are dead but are animated with nightsister magic.

That's what i figured the red ribbons around them signified.

Thrawn is a military genius but still ordinary soldier so no good against force guys

In books he had personal assasin/bodyguard to handle fighting

Ep's 3, 4 and 6 feel alot like the 1st trilogy. Ep 5 was filler.

Once again, my light saber gets activated when I see Sabine and Shin onscreen. I wanna forcetongue their bumholes.

Damn missed that too but that's... fucking awesome. So it's like Disney's The Black Hole from 1979 with Captain Reinhardt and his zombie crew. And had to look it up but his CPT Enoch is an homage to this guy of the same name (also undead) from the Ben 10 cartoons that aired after Clone Wars on Cartoon Network.

I watched the Thrawn scenes again and it's not THAT bad. He does sound menacing and cool and looks OK from the chest up despite having a Norwood 3 hairline. It's not like he's Grand Admiral Porkins but Mikkelsen at least could have lost the gut to look lean and mean. That would have been the best option vs. what they did to James Earl Jones.

I've always visualized Thrawn like Tywin Lannister or Rommel. Lean and mean and can backhand you with a gloved fist if he needs to.

I'm also conflicted on Thrawn trying to double-cross Sabine. I defer to those who know him better but seems like a bitch move to me. Baylan explicitly promised "no harm will come to you" and he's visibly conflicted on following through with the plan to off Sabine. I know Thrawn didn't personally make the deal with Sabine but directing Baylan to go back on his word like that conflicts with the "honor among thieves" villain archtype I thought Thrawn was.

Could be zombies, could be Aliens because in the EU Thrawn recruited anyone good enough for the 501st...yep that 501st, think they had red trim on their armor or am I mistaken
